1321479339 68 'The Social Network' Tops Key Art Awards

The trailer for David Fincher's the Social Network, created by Mark Woollen & Associates, won the Grand Key Art award in the audio visual category at the 40th Annual Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards on Wednesday night at the Cinerama Dome. it was the only project to win the top prize.

The trailer also earned gold awards for editing and music and the Social Network website by Imageworks Interactive, earned a bronze in the interactive category.

"we rebooted the awards this year," the Hollywood Reporter Publisher and Senior Vice President Lynne Segall said during her introductory remarks. "we even reinvented the trophy." the new Key Art award resembles a gold klieg light.

The Key Art Awards are Hollywood's most recognized awards competition for advertising and communications. this year, THR teamed with the Clio Awards to change the judging methods. the five judging panels, made up senior level creatives in each medium, ranked the entries on three levels: gold, silver and bronze. however, each jury was not obligated to award a gold or silver to any work if they felt nothing was worthy of the ranking.

The eligibility period was also expanded to 20 months, including anything viewed by the public from January 2010 to August 2011.

Segall also acknowledged the momentary leak of the night's winners online with a series of spoof one-sheets from the Social Network ("you don't get to 2500 entries without making a few enemies."), 127 Hours (127 Leaks) and the Fighter (The Leaker).

Other projects earning gold awards were the Inception trailer by BLT & Associates in the audio/visual category for motion graphics and original music. the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol trailer by AV Squad in the audio visual category of editing and the Last Exorcism's Chatroulette Reactions on YouTube by the Visionaire Group in the audio visual category of viral marketing.

The films that took home the most awards were Inception, which took seven total awards in the audio/visual and out of home campaign categories; Kick-Ass, which received seven awards in the audio/visual, out of home and interactive campaign categories; and the Fighter, which won six awards in the audio/visual category.

Auburn gets a rare chance to just dance – Decaturdaily.com

No Comments 16 November 2011

AUBURN — somewhere in the middle of the third quarter, time was out for television, and Auburn’s defense was left to stand on the field until whatever commercial on ESPNU was finished playing.

Some piece of music was blasted over the Jordan-Hare Stadium speakers, something with a beat to it.

1218952154 Auburn gets a rare chance to just dance Decaturdaily.com Mark Edwards So Auburn defensive back T’Sharvan Bell began dancing. it didn’t start out as much. Standing out wide as he waited to cover an Ole miss receiver, he began moving his shoulders. his hips and legs followed. it got more and more involved, and he didn’t stop until time was in and Ole Miss’ offense lined up to run a play.

Who can blame Bell? He and his Auburn teammates deserved to have a little fun in their comfortable 41-23 win over Ole miss on Saturday night.

Although the Tigers are a respectable 6-3 with the only losses coming to ranked teams, they’ve almost never had a chance to breathe this year.

Hard to put away foes

Sure, it’s fun to win. Think of how often coaches, when confronted with complaints that practice is hard, have said, “The fun is in the winning.” And Auburn has had fun in the locker room a half-dozen times this year. but these Tigers aren’t good enough to put away teams often and haven’t had many moments during a game to sit back and enjoy.

No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama have been able to laugh and let loose every week long before the final horn sounded.

For them, the second-string quarterback, third-string tailback and seventh-string wide receiver go into a game figuring their team will blow out the opponent far enough that they’ll get to play.

Auburn, however, has had to fight all the way most nights, and if you’re stepping on the field, you better be ready to help win a game. There’s almost never any room to substitute someone just because he worked hard and deserves to play. sorry moms of the reserve players, that’s just the way it is this year.

The Tigers needed a late touchdown to beat Utah State and a late defensive stop to put away Mississippi State. South Carolina and Florida weren’t finished off until near the end, too. until Saturday, the 30-14 win over Florida Atlantic five weeks was the closest Auburn got to a “laugher.”

We’ve spent all season going over the reasons Auburn is in a situation where it can’t hammer anybody but two badly struggling teams, FAU and Ole miss, which has lost 11 straight SEC games.

Former coach Tommy Tuberville left behind little talent beyond last year’s senior class.

Head coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn made a mistake in selecting Barrett Trotter to start at quarterback.

On defense, even the few experienced, talented players among the group are inconsistent. Yada, yada, yada.

At least seven wins

But even with the shortcomings, Auburn is putting together an OK season, considering what it faced this year. with three more regular-season games left, Auburn appears certain to go no worse than 7-5 and go to a bowl game. the Tigers will beat Samford for homecoming in two weeks. A win next Saturday at Georgia is possible.

Alabama will visit Auburn for the final regular-season game, and that’s probably a loss. but if the Tigers can win a bowl, they’ve got a chance to finish with at least eight wins, possibly nine.

It’s a come down from a national championship, certainly, but Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and a whole bunch of their teammates aren’t here anymore. considering where this team began, eight or nine wins would be reason for Auburn to celebrate.

So, go ahead and dance, T’Sharvan Bell. Just dance.

Halloween carnival spooks Denton

1321436125 66 Halloween carnival spooks Denton

Jason Priest / Contributing Writer

In just six hours, Denton officials and dozens of volunteers will transform the MLK Jr. Recreation Center from a morning carnival to an evening kids haunted house for the annual Halloween celebration.

Carnival games, face painting, a bounce house and a costume contest are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, and then the 20,000-square-foot center will be transformed into the haunted house that opens at 6 p.m.

“We hope people come out because it’s a free event and family friendly,” said Denesha Factory, a Parks and Recreation coordinator.

This is her first year coordinating the event, but Factory said the annual program has been going on longer than she can remember.

The previous years’ attendance has been between 300 and 400, but officials are hoping to exceed that amount this year, Factory said.

The carnival will conclude at noon when costume judging is finished and first-, second- and third-place awards are given.

Journalism junior Colston Rawls said he plans to attend dressed as Ron Swanson from NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.”

Rawls described the character as “the definition of man; red meat and whiskey course through his veins, and his mustache is self-explanatory.”

A crew of four recreation center staff members and volunteers from the Denton community will host the event.

“The majority of help comes from volunteers,” said Brendan Herrera, recreation center coordinator. “We try to get at least 70 each year. It’s the bare minimum to run smoothly.”

For more information about the carnival, visit Denton’s Parks and Recreation events calendar at cityofdenton.com.

Have PS3 HD Collections Gone Too Far?

No Comments 16 November 2011

1321405518 48 Have PS3 HD Collections Gone Too Far?

Remakes and collections are all the rage these days, especially on PlayStation 3. It all started out innocuously enough with the release of the God of War Collection in November of 2009. Bundling God of War and God of War II together in anticipation of God of War III’s release in March of the following year, the God of War Collection made a lot of sense at the time. It sold well, whet gamers’ appetites for God of War III, and hell, it was Trophy-enabled, too. this wasn’t the end, though. It was only the beginning. The Sly Collection came out almost a year after the God of War Collection to the day, dropping rather randomly in the flooded holiday season of November 2010. Cleverly, this particular package held quite the Easter Egg on its Blu-ray in the form of a trailer for the yet-unknown fourth Sly game, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (lovingly referred to since as Sly 4). under development at Sanzaru Games, the same team that put The Sly Collection together, Sly 4 is set for release on PS3 in 2012. God of War Collection opened the floodgates. Both collections were fun, bundling together great PlayStation 2-exclusive experiences at a discounted price. It’s hard to complain about that… at least until the third-party publishers started jumping on the ship full bore, tipping the scales away from a more moderate first-party approach and something resembling the likes of a money-grab, especially when you consider that sustained PS3 backwards compatibility would render many of these anthologies useless. these days, we’re swimming in collections on the PlayStation 3. Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell have graced the console in this form, and more compilations, such as Devil May cry and Zone of the Enders, are still forthcoming. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection just came out this week. Individual re-releases are gaining steam, too. Capcom just re-released Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X on the PSN, and SEGA has been going buck-wild on the PlayStation Store, releasing everything from the well-liked Crazy Taxi to the utterly abysmal Altered Beast and many games in between (especially strange considering many of these games were already on the PS3 collection SEGA released in 2009). No one knew about Sly 4 until The Sly Collection revealed it.I don’t want it to seem like I’m complaining. I’m not. I would kill for a Trophy-enabled Classic Mega Man Collection, a compilation of the Onimusha games and a way to enjoy the old-school Castlevania games with a DualShock controller. I also don’t want to make it seem like re-releases are new. Super Mario All-Stars was getting regular rotation in my SNES catalog nearly two decades ago, and I subscribed to Nintendo Power just to get the special Zelda bundle on GameCube. But with Jak and Daxter Collection coming to PS3, we have to ask ourselves some obvious questions. Are we going overboard in looking back, instead of focusing on looking forward? Have the scales been officially tipped? There’s too much of a static attitude in the gaming industry. Original games aren’t often pursued because they are expensive to produce with no guarantee that they will do well and hazardous to put out because there’s no guarantee of a return on said investment. indeed, a quick look at the sales charts prove that new titles fail more often than they succeed. certain companies have shown a propensity for developing original properties recently — Insomniac and its new game Overstrike instantly come to mind, as does just about anything a studio like Double Fine does — but such risks are few and far between. It’s admittedly understandable why. Have the scales been tipped?indeed, at the end of the day, I always fall back on the rather traditional way I look at markets. Something being sold is only worth what someone will pay for it, and there’s obviously a demand for HD collections, even if that demand is at times limited. I just can’t help but wonder if we’re running into a sort of conundrum, one that requires our attention and concern as gamers. What are your thoughts on the flood of re-releases and collections these days? Sound-off in the comments below.

Bloomberg/Milan/Athens Owners of Greece’s banks may be wiped out over coming months as the government prepares to take over the lenders after bondholders agreed to 50% writedowns on the nation’s debt. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said on Thursday that the government will likely buy shares in some banks as a result of a planned writedown, without giving details. the €30bn ($42bn) already set aside for Greek bank aid should cover the lenders’ needs, the European Banking Authority said. For shareholders in Greece’s publicly traded banks, led by National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank, there may be little left once the companies end up in government control. the six biggest lenders, which have assets of €380.2bn and a combined market value of about €3.6bn, are unlikely to attract investors willing to bet on a turnaround. Banks are likely to sell assets, such as their profitable divisions outside the country, as well as attempt stock sales to avoid nationalisation, Euroxx Securities, an Athens-based brokerage, said in a note. National Bank, the country’s biggest bank, is the only lender with a chance of staying out of government hands, by selling Finansbank, its Turkish unit, according to UBS analyst Alexander Kyrtsis. EFG Eurobank Ergasias and Piraeus Bank will have the greatest capital needs, according to Deutsche Bank’s Giannoulis. Piraeus Bank chairman Michalis Sallas on October 14 said Greece’s banks and pension funds had the most to lose by increasing bondholders’ losses to 50%. Alpha Bank agreed in August to buy Eurobank and increase capital by as much as €3.9bn backed by an investment from Paramount Services Holding, which represents Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund. Investors are scheduled to vote on the merger November 4 and November 15. “Greek banks never had choice on whether to buy Greek bonds, and they’re now being punished,” said Andreas Koutras an analyst at InTouch Capital Markets Ltd, a fixed-income adviser in London. “It is possible equity valuations will go to zero.” most banks won’t have any alternative other than government aid, Dimitris Giannoulis, an analyst at Deutsche Bank in Athens, said in a phone interview. “Foreign investors will continue to avoid Greece, and we’re likely to see retail investors who have dominated recent trading reduce bank exposure too,” Giannoulis said. Shares of the country’s six biggest banks, which value the lenders at about a quarter of their tangible book value – a measure of what shareholders can expect to receive if a company fails and liquidates its assets – rose on Thursday amid optimism that expanded firepower of the rescue fund to 1tn euros may help stem the region’s crisis. “Nationalising the banks is extremely strong,” said Guillermo Nielsen, a former finance minister of Argentina. “most government entities have a lack of leadership and management. Leaders should be careful not to take extreme measures because things can improve over time.” Papandreou told reporters in Brussels on Thursday that bank nationalization would benefit Greece. “We had a long discussion on this with the Swedes who went through this process some years ago, who believe it was the best available and which had very positive results for both the Swedish banking system and the Swedish economy,” he said. Sweden nationalised two big banks in the 1990s. It still owns a stake in Nordea AB almost two decades after taking over its predecessor and merging it with another lender the government had nationalised. most Greek banks will need significant recapitalisation, the terms of which remain unknown and subject to market conditions, National Securities, the brokerage arm of National Bank, wrote in a note to clients yesterday. Lenders are likely to be given until June 30 to replenish capital. under Greek law, the nation’s banks can apply for state aid if they can’t meet capital requirements and once they have attempted to raise capital by tapping new and existing owners. Banks that are publicly traded must show they tried to sell stock at a discount to their market value. the state-backed Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, set up under a May 2010 European Union-led bailout, will inject capital that it receives. the fund is run by seven board members appointed by the nation’s central bank and vetted by the finance ministry. It will have board representation, with veto powers, at the banks it controls. the next few days may be critical in deciding lenders’ immediate fate, according to UBS analyst Alexander Kyrtsis. the balance of deposits held by businesses and households in Greek banks rose to €188.6bn in August from €187.2bn in July, according to an October 6 statement from the Bank of Greece. It was the first rise this year and came after of a July 21 accord on a second Greek bailout. A wave of private-sector restructurings triggered by the government debt writedown and a worsening economic outlook is likely to hit the banks in coming months. Greek lenders have about €228bn of loans outstanding to Greek companies and individuals, central bank data show. “you need to get the banks lending again because the next round will be private debt restructuring, so you need to make the banks stronger,” said Nielsen. “you need to keep the day- to-day business going.”

Showbiz: Celebrate with Ruth

No Comments 15 November 2011

1321358745 21 Showbiz: Celebrate with Ruth

MENTION an Indonesian diva who is the toast of Asia, and the name Ruth Sahanaya instantly comes to mind. No stranger to music lovers here, the mother of two from Bandung is best known for her passionate rendition of the love ballad Kaulah Segalanya. Ruth has 15 best-selling albums to her credit, beginning with Seputih Kasih in 1987. five years ago, she mesmerised Indonesian and Malaysian fans with a series of sold-out concerts, with two other Indonesian divas, Krisdayanti and Titi Dwijayati, or simply, Titi DJ. Ruth, 45, has represented her country in a few international music festivals, most notably Midnight Sun Song Festival in Finland (1992), the Mario Frangoulis Concert (Athens, 2002) and the East-West Collaboration in Peace (Bali, 2002). Come Dec 17, she will mesmerise once more with her 25th anniversary concert at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Jalan Ampang. Datuk Khadijah Ibrahim, a longtime friend whom she greatly admires, will be her special guest for the 8pm concert. “Malaysia is my second home of sorts and I’m always delighted to sing for fans here. It’s going to be my first major collaboration with Khaty,” she says. the 2½-hour concert will see Ruth performing 30 songs, a mix of old and new, accompanied by 50 musicians from Indonesia. “I’ll also share with the audience lots of heart–warming memories about the musicians,” she says. Khadijah, who is delighted to team up with Ruth, says there will be “lots of surprises”. “I’ll be singing Ruth’s songs and she’ll be singing mine. We’ll have a few duets, too.” Khadijah adds that they will arrive at the venue in style. besides being dressed to thrill, they will drive up in two Chevrolet Captivas. the concert is the last of three to mark Ruth’s 25 years in music. “In November last year, I had my anniversary concert in Jakarta, while last June I had another in Singapore,” she says. “I decided to perform in three countries as most of my overseas fans are from Singapore and Malaysia.” Recalling her first attempt to enter the Malaysian music market in the late 1980s, Ruth says she was not confident then. “But not long after, Kaulah Segalanya became an instant hit in Malaysia and Singapore. I then decided to make as many visits as possible to the two countries over the years,” she says, adding that she has become friends with some of Malaysia’s finest female artistes. Health-conscious and always looking radiant, Ruth says her secret to staying youthful and fit is simple. “Eat right, be positive and be happy.” She advises artistes to be honest in their craft, to respect fans and to lead disciplined lives. “While it’s easy to rise to the top of the charts, it’s difficult to stay on top. Career longevity demands sacrifice, discipline and honesty,” she says. “A successful entertainer must never forget his or her fans, roots and values. He or she must never stop learning, too.” On future plans, Ruth says she’s getting acquainted with jazz and hopes to launch an album to mark her 25 years in music. the Dec 17 concert is organised by Acaralis Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd, with the support of Anak Darul Aman Malaysia (Adam). Proceeds from the concert will go to various charities and sports organisations that Adam supports, including Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah, Yayasan Anak Yatim Sultanah Haminah, the Sultan Abdul Hamid College Fund and the Kedah Football Association. Adam president Faridzul Kassim says the proceeds will also help fund the college’s new centennial hall. the former footballer is happy that the concert has the support of the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, both of whom studied at the college. Dr Mahathir is the concert’s patron. Tickets, from RM128 to RM1,500, are available online at iLasso or at Khadijah’s Kitchen in Jalan Bukit, Section 12, Petaling Jaya. Call 03-7957 6088.

Mathematical wipeout: Slater hasn’t won 11th title yet

1321347939 12 Mathematical wipeout: Slater hasnt won 11th title yet

Hold off on that surfing celebration.

Because of a miscalculation by world tour officials surfing legend Kelly Slater has not won his historic 11th title yet despite his Round 3 victory Tuesday at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

Slater, 39, was awarded the victory trophy in a celebration Tuesday afternoon but he discovered the mistake, announcing it in a Twitter post Friday. he wrote: “ASPworldtour isn’t gonna be happy with me or this but realized last night and confirmed just now with them. only honest thing to do.”

The Association of Surfing Professionals acknowledged the error Friday in a news release, saying Slater had been prematurely awarded the title after a come-from-behind victory over Australian Dan Ross.

“Our rankings’ system is designed to split tie-breaks based off of seed points,” ASP tour manager Renato Hickel said in a prepared statement. “Kelly and Owen Wright tied at best nine of 11 results, so we went to best eight of 11 results and the system gave it to Kelly based off his higher seed position. We were operating under that assumption and created the ASP World Title scenarios based off of that. This was a mistake. In the end, we’re responsible for this and should be held accountable. We apologize to our fans, the surfers and to Owen and Kelly.”

Slater, from Cocoa Beach, Fla., must win one more heat, either at the Rip Curl Pro Search in San Francisco in the coming days or at the season finale next month in Hawaii to get his 11th title. Wright needs to win both the Rip Curl Pro Search and the Hawaiian events to overtake Slater.

“Well at least it adds some excitement while we wait,” Slater wrote in another Tweet. “We all make errors. maybe I made one going public but on the bright side it will create bigger interest.”

Event organizers will reconvene Saturday morning to determine if surf conditions are good enough to resume the contest at Ocean Beach for 8 a.m.
