New ‘Family Edition’ Wii Drops Gamecube Support

1319375015 99 New Family Edition Wii Drops Gamecube Support

Nintendo’s announced a newly configured Wii console which ditches support for Gamecube software and accessories.

Nintendo has announced that from October 23, you’ll be able to pick up a “newly configured” Wii console in a bundle with new Super Mario Bros. and a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack CD, or from November 4, a “Family Edition” bundle that comes with Wii Sports and Wii Party. It’s an ideal Christmas present, or so they say.

So what’s “newly configured” about the console? Well, it’s designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically (big deal) — but the potentially bigger news for gamers is that it drops support for Gamecube software and accessories.

That’s right — new Wii consoles will be ditching backward compatibility. why? Presumably to save costs. the price of the new bundle won’t be any lower, though — the Mario bundle will be offered at $149.99 alongside the previous-model package which comes with Mario Kart and a Wii Wheel for the same price. As well as this, dropping Gamecube support cuts off access to a variety of classic games from the Gamecube generation, most of which can be picked up pretty cheap these days. Titles like Metal Gear Solid remake the Twin Snakes; Silicon Knights’ fantastic survival horror game Eternal Darkness; and indeed Nintendo’s own titles such as Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Smash Bros. Melee — these are all excellent games that still play well today. As well as all this, it means you won’t be able to use GameCube controllers with Virtual Console titles, either.

Following the November 4 release of the new-model Wii, a blue version will be released in time for the release of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games — currently set for November 18 in Europe. Following this, a black Wii Fit bundle, including a black new-type Wii, a black Wii Balance Board and a black copy of Wii Fit plus will be released on December 2.

Published: Monday, October 10, 2011

Updated: Monday, October 10, 2011

the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii have been compared for quite some time as to which system is better? except for when the Wii first came out, it has been in the shadow of the the 360 and the PS3.

When the Wii came out in 2006, it was selling out of stores in less than an hour. it was the first motion sensing video game system of it’s kind, and I wanted to get one very badly. the only video game systems that I owned was a PlayStation, the first Xbox, and two Game Boys.

I didn’t buy an Xbox 360 when it came out because it cost too much money. it took me a month after the Wii was released to get one.

When I first played with Wii Sports and the one game I bought, I had a good time, but the game got old really fast.

I got so sick of the motion gameplay, so I eventually sold it to a person that wanted it.

After I sold the Nintendo Wii, I decided to buy a PS3. I purchased it because it was free to play online, whereas for the 360, playing online on for the Xbox Live service cost money.

the PS3 is amazing, and I am very happy with my decision to buy it.

the 360 has been known for having the best and a better variety of games than the PS3. the 360 has Halo, Gears of War, and plenty of other good games than the PlayStation 3 doesn’t have.

“The 360 has the best games out there, I love Halo and Gears, they are amazing games,” said Saddleback student, Eric Puente, 21, architecture.

I thought about purchasing the Xbox 360 because of the games, but I didn’t want to pay to play online.

the PS3 is the best system. it may not have the very best selection of games but they are still great, and I’m sticking by my decision.

my favorite games to play are call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, Madden NFL, and Metal Gear Solid.

I am looking forward to the new call of Duty coming out in November, and Twisted Metal which is set to release in Feb. of next year.

the Twisted Metal series was one of my favorite gaming franchises growing up along with Pokemon, and Grand Theft Auto. the new Twisted Metal is only set to release for the PS3, and not the Xbox 360.

these three systems are all very fun, but the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are in a league of their own, and the PS3 has the slight edge.

NHL: 12 Best Active Players Who Have Not Won a Stanley Cup

No Comments 21 September 2011

1316588609 74 NHL: 12 Best Active Players Who Have Not Won a Stanley Cup

As the evenings start to slowly cool here in Pittsburgh, I noticed a few things. For starters, I must be oblivious to the world. How did I manage to not notice this earthquake everyone is carrying on about?? secondly, and much more importantly, hockey is just around the bend!!!

If that does not get you excited, then read no further. nothing I say will make you care about this list. Seriously. “G’wan, git!”

OK, if you stayed past that pseudo-sentence then you are the real deal. clearly this list is for you.

Winning the Stanley Cup means everything to a hockey player. It literally can define some player’s careers.

Even as fans, we have a small taste of what it means. clearly, it is the coolest trophy and ceremony in all of sports. But winning a Stanley Cup goes beyond that. Hell, I once waited in line for four and half hours in line at the Civic Arena to touch it (it is safe to say my playing career is not going to take off at this point in my life so I did not mess anything up with the Hockey Gods).

While it is no less true in other sports, winning the Cup makes someone immortal. the names carved into its silver makeup a “who’s who” of the sport’s crowning moments. Where else can you find Wayne Gretzky and mark Messier alongside Jim Paek or Jay Caufield?

Now, this list could easily go to 20 or even 25 players and still be filled with deserving players. I wanted a challenge, and hopefully some discussion on the matter though. stopping at 12 was my way of hopefully kicking that up.

So as we look at the 12 best active players that have not won a Stanley Cup, take time to think who would be on your list. Surely some of them would still be. But maybe you think Jason Spezza deserves a nod or perhaps someone like Dwayne Roloson or Kimmo Timmonen are on your list.

Regardless, let me know what you think. there are definitely some guys being left off this list that deserve to be mentioned.

Baseball comes to Kinect Sports Season 2 – StuffWeLike.com

Baseball comes to Kinect Sports Season 2 – StuffWeLike.com

Question is, is it better than what you get on the Wii with Wii Sports? we can’t answer that question just yet until we get our own hands on with the game, but it does look pretty detailed.

Fans are going head-to-head at PAX Prime in pitcher-versus-batter split-screen showdowns.

The game features in-game voice commands and body-tracking. You will play both offense and defense to see who can score the most runs during a two inning game.

On offense, you’ll step into the batter’s box and swing away with the ability to aim hits left or right by swinging early or late, depending on where the fielders are playing. You can bunt, get a base hit, or give your swing more pop by stepping into it or using your voice to call in the Star Batter who has a higher chance of hitting a homerun but can only be used once per game. Once the ball is in play, it’s up to you to run the bases and beat out the throw, sliding if it’s going to be close!

On defense, its all about pitching. Depending on your arm speed, you’ll be able to throw a variety of six pitches from a mean slider to a tricky curve to a good old fashioned heater. like hitting, you’ll have the option to use your voice to call in your Star Pitcher once per game. His fastballs make hitter’s heads spin, so be sure to use him when you need that crucial third out. if your opponents do manage to put the ball in play, you’ll have to flash your leather and showcase your lightning reflexes by tracking the hit and making the catch to keep runners off base.

How to Play Wii Sports

 How to Play Wii Sports

I love when people ask me how to play Wii sports, because the beauty of Wii Sports is that it’s really easy to play. what I want to tell people is to simply grab the controller, and before you know it, you’ll be controlling the game like it’s second nature. That’s what is so great about the game.

There are five games in Wii Sports. Bowling, Boxing, Golf, Tennis, and Baseball. So how do you play them? Baseball is actually very simple to play. Hold the Wii remote like you would an actual Baseball bat. Once done, swing the remote like you would a real Baseball bat and try and hit the ball. That’s it. So how do you pitch? Simply hold the Wii remote in your hand, and shake it. Or essentially, mimic what you would do while throwing a real ball, just don’t let go of the Wii remote.

There are different ways you can throw the ball by simply utilizing the buttons on the Wii remote. with Bowling, press and hold the B button and swing the controller as you would a bowling ball. The B button acts as your fingers do with a real bowling ball. let go of the B button to release the bowling ball. with Tennis, once again, swing the remote as you would a real tennis racquet.

To serve the ball, swing the remote upwards to throw the ball upwards. As the ball comes down, swing the remote to try and hit it. if you want, you can replace the upwards motion to throw the ball up with pressing the a button instead. with Golf, swing the remote like you would a real golf club. For a practice shot, simply swing the remote. when your ready to finally hit the ball, swing the remote, but only this time hold down the a button at the same time.

Last but not least is Boxing. Connect the Nunchuck into the Wii remote and start swinging away. yes, the remote and nunchuck act as your arms and hands. That pretty much wraps it up on how to play Wii Sports. make sure your wearing the wrist strap, just in case your controller decides to go flying. Wii Sports comes bundled with the purchase of a Wii console. It’s a game the whole family can enjoy. have fun

Matt Hayes’ First-and-10

No Comments 14 September 2011

 Matt Hayes First and 10

1. I don’t want to get on a soapbox, but ….

It’s time to have a serious, sensible discussion about the Heisman Trophy.

one that doesn’t include the “wow” factor.

Apparently, the race for the greatest individual award in all of sports is now in the hands of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson. How do I know this?

because ESPN tells us so, that’s why. like you need any other reason.

Shortly after Robinson and Michigan beat Notre Dame in one of the wildest games in years, one of the talking heads on the network proclaimed Robinson as the leader of the Heisman race. he later tweeted that Robinson is the leader because of the “wow” factor.

There’s a wow factor there, all right.

? Wow, Robinson can really throw that jump ball.

? Wow, Robinson made a lot of awful throws. he was 11-of-24 with three interceptions against ND, and had at least six throws that weren’t in the same county as his receivers—who, in case this matters, were running free in the Irish secondary all night.

? Wow, Michigan’s offense is Robinson drops, breaks containment and runs, or breaks containment and throws up a jump ball that—in most cases—is a risky proposition. Most cases not being the Notre Dame secondary.

? Wow, Notre Dame couldn’t have given away a game with more gusto.

For this, we are told that D-Rob—an utter joy to watch, mind you—is your Heisman leader. All of two weeks into the season.

“Wow” is what Robert Griffin III did to TCU in the season opener. “Wow” is what Cam Newton did to everyone last fall, especially his stiff-arming of the NCAA.

“Wow” is not standing in the huddle and calling “get open,” and throwing up a jump ball and hoping your man comes down with it. because that’s essentially what Robinson did against the Irish that delivered those “wow” moments that Junior Hemmingway and Roy Roundtree and Jeremy Gallon came down with.

nearly every time Michigan had a specific timing route that had to be thrown, Robinson missed badly. he had much better games last season that went largely unnoticed once Michigan began to tank.

But at that point, ESPN had moved onto another “wow” moment.

There’s a wow factor here, all right.

Gene Chizik and the Auburn Tigers are 2-0 after beating Mississippi State. (AP Photo)

2. Speaking of “Wow” factors

those folks at ESPN sure are slick. They jumped in bed with Texas to distribute the Longhorn Network, which has all but ended the Big 12 as we know it.

Now ESPN is “covering” specific, elite college teams and reporting on them 24/7. Among that group: Oklahoma.

Maybe it’s just me, but it’s probably not good for a reporter working for ESPN’s “Sooner Nation” to stand in front of a camera and interview a 17-year old after a high school football game with a microphone emblazoned with “ESPN.” If you’re 17, and someone sticks an ESPN Sooner Nation microphone in your face and asks if the Sooners have offered a scholarship, would that influence your decision?

better yet, after that long, exciting game, you go home to see yourself interviewed online and click on soonernation.com and get this: an Oklahoma fan and alumni (see: boosters) website.

Is all this an NCAA violation? You tell me. Does it give Oklahoma a recruiting advantage? I could probably corral about, I don’t know, 119 college coaches who think it does.

the reality is, it’s in ESPN’s best interest that Oklahoma continue as an elite team, which makes ESPN’s product (Big 12 games) more marketable to advertisers (see: money). It’s not that far of a reach, people.

Maybe Baylor president Ken Starr will one day figure out that this, too, is more than a land deal gone wrong.

3. Keeping the little guy down

First, it was the big bully SEC. Now it’s the NCAA desperately trying to show everyone it still has power—whether you like it or not.

In the middle of it all sits Boise State—beaten down once again.

at issue: the eligibility the Amsterdam Three—three Boise State players (two starters, one key reserve) whose eligibility is in question because all three played club football in Amsterdam. the timing, of course, is interesting considering all three have been at Boise State for at least two years.

And now the NCAA is interested.

They’re not interested enough to call and speak to a memorabilia hawk who allegedly paid former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor thousands of dollars for his signature. not interested enough to call Columbus, Ohio, car salesman Aaron Kniffin who let Pryor test drive cars for days—in one instance allowing Pryor to use his own personal car to drive to Pennsylvania.

But interested enough to see if some slappy in the Netherlands may have given these guys a sweaty handshake full of Euros. Imagine that.

one of the Boise State players—projected starting safety Cedric Febis—has been with Boise State since January 2007. so maybe by 2015 the NCAA will get around to interview Kniffin.

4. Stick to game analysis

Anyone else beginning to get annoyed by Urban Meyer?

he brings some nice Xs and Os to game day telecasts, but please ESPN, don’t ask Urb to be the moral compass and pontificate on programs dealing in controversy.

Dude had more than 30 players arrested in his six seasons at Florida. That’s a three followed by a zero.

And he’s concerned about Brian Kelly’s foul language?

5. This week’s sign that the acid trip offseason is still with us

In a matter of two weeks, SEC fans have gone from stating Boise State is overrated, to Georgia is awful (after the Broncos humiliated the Bulldogs), to maybe Boise State could win the SEC East Division (after Georgia coughed up a victory over no. 12 South Carolina), to there’s no way in hell Boise State could beat Alabama or LSU.

Don’t worry, good folks of the south. You’ve still got your “they can’t go through our weekly SEC schedule” argument in your holster. Use it judiciously.

6. Coaching 101

If by some strange chance you were still awake long into the Friday night/Saturday morning magic that was Missouri vs. Arizona State, you had the chance to witness true coaching genius.

there, with 12 seconds remaining in regulation, Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel froze his own kicker with consecutive timeouts. seriously, he did.

Pinkel’s rationale for this epic move? he wanted to get Arizona State linebacker—and noted Wildman—Vontaze Burfict to jump offsides. Seems as though the 48-yard field goal was just out of Tigers kicker Grant Ressel’s range, and another five yards would’ve helped.

Ressel was only a Groza Award semifinalist last year; only a preseason All-American this fall; only had made 47-of-51 previous kicks, including a 47-yarder in the third quarter of the ASU game.

Of course Ressel missed. Of course Missouri lost in overtime.

Of course the consecutive timeouts didn’t affect Ressel’s confidence or Missouri’s mental makeup in overtime.

7. First the onside kick, then the goal line stand

I don’t really care what Auburn does this week at Clemson to get to 10-0 under coach Gene Chizik in games decided by eight points or less.

as long as it keeps agitating Alabama fans. And you better believe it does.

8. the excuse maker

as bad as it looked outside a solemn Notre Dame locker room Saturday night, it just got worse when Irish coach Brian Kelly decided on Monday to find an excuse for the Irish’s 0-2 start this season.

“Again, as you see the schedule, Ohio State is playing Toledo,” Kelly said. “I mean teams are playing easy games early on in the schedule. We don’t get that luxury.”

there are a couple of things going on here. First, Kelly still doesn’t like Ohio State from his days as coach at Cincinnati and Ohio State refusing to play the Bearcats. Bonus points for that dig, B.K.

second, panic has set in when it really shouldn’t.

Yes, Notre Dame has lost two games. But it’s surely not because of the two heavyweights they played. USF? Nice team; top 40. Michigan? Ditto.

In fact, I’d probably take Toledo against Michigan on a neutral field. Even with mr. Wow.

9. It’s the quarterback not the coach

I hate to be the guy who brings up the obvious everyone would rather conveniently ignore, but at what point are we going to stop talking about Joe Paterno coaching from the sidelines or the press box—and start talking about Penn State’s inability to recruit and develop a quarterback?

Anyone else think it’s odd that a major BCS power, a team with the history, tradition and cash of Pennsylvania State University, has a co-starting quarterback who wouldn’t play at a majority of FCS schools? Or another co-starter who looks utterly lost?

I’m not a coach and never claimed to be. But if my quarterback (Matt McGloin) throws five interceptions in a bowl loss to a team that is completely in the tank (Florida), I’m probably looking for another quarterback while I’m recruiting. And I’m probably not replacing him—or sharing the job—with a guy who threatened to leave the team all summer and eventually came back.

oh yeah, this is going to work.

Maybe losing at Temple this week will shake things up a bit. Maybe then the discussion won’t be JoePa’s injured leg—but the wounded gait of the program.

I have all my settings set to "right handed" but for some reason, Wii Sports makes my character left-handed when I play golf. how do I change this?

when you choose the which player to use in golf it should give you a screen that shows you the settings again, check the settings before starting to play the actual game of golf
