Jayhawks aware of Baylor QB Robert Griffin’s speed

1321223725 25 Jayhawks aware of Baylor QB Robert Griffin’s speed

Kansas University senior Isiah Barfield isn’t afraid to admit it. Although he chooses to play with the Jayhawks during dynasty mode on the popular NCAA Football 12 video game, his team of choice for online battles and one-game scenarios is KU’s opponent this weekend — Baylor.

There’s one reason, and his name is Robert Griffin III.

“I know what he can do,” joked Barfield of the Bears’ dynamic quarterback, who ranks second in the nation in total offense. “I’ve played against him before, and I know his capabilities.”

With Barfield being somewhat of an expert on all things RG3, he seemed like the obvious choice to answer the question of which version is better, the real life Griffin or the EA Sports clone?

“I’d have to say in person because, in the video game, if a player has 80 speed, they’re gonna catch him,” Barfield said. “But if you’ve got a fast player out on the football field, 50 percent of the time they’re not gonna catch him. in real life, he’s a lot better than the video game.”

Senior Day motivating

While Saturday’s 1 p.m. kickoff against Baylor at Memorial Stadium will mark the final home game in the careers of 15 KU seniors, the expected emotions of the day actually have had a bigger impact on several KU underclassmen.

“We don’t want to send those guys out of here with a loss,” sophomore cornerback Tyler Patmon said. “It’s big to them, so in turn that makes it big to us.”

Asked what he would remember most about the senior class, Patmon pointed to the members’ ability to teach.

“It’s a class full of great leaders,” he said. “When I was a freshman, I learned a lot from those guys that are graduating right now.”

Added KU coach Turner Gill of the group: “In the two years I’ve been here and seeing those guys who have really contacted us as coaches … they come into our offices. they gather their own position groups on theirown and bring them in at different times. they do the extra things. this group of seniors has continued to keep this team close even through the unfortunate circumstances as far as where we’re at in our season. this team is still very close. I give a lot of the credit to the seniors.”

TDs a must vs. BU

Although Kansas is averaging a shade under 25 points per game this season, several Jayhawks talked this week about the importance of putting up points Saturday to keep up with Baylor, which averages 42 points per game.

“Offensively, we have to score touchdowns,” Gill said. “You can’t kick field goals and expect to beat Baylor.”

Offensive coordinator Chuck Long agreed.

“The Iowa State game was a field-position game, and it came down to every little play, including the field goals,” Long said. “But this game, based on what they’ve done, we have to score points.”

Asked if the need to light up the scoreboard could change his mind-set when faced with third- and fourth-down decisions deep in Baylor territory, Gill hinted at a different approach.

“It could,” he said. “You state what you’re going to do, and, in most cases, I will follow that. but there’s always extenuating circumstances, and you gotta make some decisions, as a head coach, to go for it, not to go for it, field goals. sometimes you gotta go kick a field goal to take something positive out of (a drive), but I know in the back of my mind that we gotta score some touchdowns.”

KU-Baylor by the numbers

Baylor leads the all-time series, 6-4, including a 4-3 mark during games played as members of the same conference. all four of the Jayhawks’ victories against the Bears have come in Lawrence, the last of which occurred in 2007, when 20th-ranked KU topped BU, 58-10. Baylor enters Saturday ranked no. 2 in the nation in total offense at 567 yards per game. That total includes 363 yards per game through the air (fifth in the nation) and 204 yards per game on the ground (22nd). Kansas ranks 90th in total offense (353), 94th in pass offense (188) and 48th in rush offense (165).

Defensively, the two teams are a little more similar, at least in the rankings. KU sits dead last in the FBS in total defense (541) and rushing defense (257) and comes in 114th in pass defense (284). the Bears rank 113th in total defense (466), including 109th against the run (212) and 96th against the pass (254).

OL Marrongelli honored

Junior offensive lineman Trevor Marrongelli has been named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 football team.

Marrongelli, KU’s left guard who hails from Austin, Texas, owns a 3.75 grade-point average in finance and has started all nine games this season.

With the honor, the two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection becomes eligible for Academic All-American honors, which will be announced later this month. the Academic All-Big 12 team will also be selected in the coming weeks.

Rivera signs with Pats

Former KU linebacker Mike Rivera, a member of the Jayhawks’ 2008 Orange Bowl championship team and 2009 graduate, signed a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots, the club announced Wednesday.

Rivera, a Shawnee Mission Northwest High graduate who spent time with the Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins, will be placed on the Patriots’ practice squad.

As a member of the practice squad, Rivera can be activated and added to the 53-man roster at any time. Players can be promoted to the active roster of any team. they have free-agent status and can sign with any team without compensation to the original team.

KEISSER: Templeton finally getting `street cred’ for 49er career

No Comments 07 November 2011

1320671154 32 KEISSER: Templeton finally getting `street cred for 49er career

It’s right there, on page 9 of the NCAA football record book.

Most catches by a running back in a game, 18, versus Utah State in 1986. Most catches by a running back in a season, 99, in 1986.

You can also find mark Templeton on page 38, noting under annual receiving champs, for his 99 catches in 1986, with a parenthetical that the former Long Beach State football star was a running back – the only running back to be a national champion since the NCAA began keeping records.

Football may be long gone from the 49er campus but a vestige or two of it still exists in print and in the memories of the players and the hearty fans who followed the program until its demise after the 1991 season. in terms of memorable moments late in the 49ers epoch, Templeton’s career and 1986 season are among the finest.

The former fullback, who in 1986 made his 262nd career catch to break the NCAA career record held by Tulsa’s Howard Twilley, will be honored Wednesday night when he is inducted into the Long Beach State Hall of Fame.

“My son is a sophomore who plays football and a few weeks ago he said, `Dad, you said you were good. why aren’t you in the Hall of Fame?”‘ the pleasant Templeton said from his home in Boise, Idaho.

“I said something like maybe they didn’t have one.

“And then a week later I got the call.”

His son also didn’t believe his dad when he said his 49ers team played UCLA, Arizona and Oregon in one season.

Maybe now dad will finally get some “street cred” from his son.

Templeton said he never paid any attention to how his stats and records still stack up.

“I assumed they were all long gone,” he said. “I think it’s kind of a neat thing to show, but it really had more to do with our quarterbacks. I always joked they dumped the ball off to me to keep their completion percentage high.”

Templeton, 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds as a 49er, was Orange County player of the year in 1981 at Foothill High after leading his team to a CIF title. he chose Long Beach over New Mexico because he wanted to stay close to home and liked the direction of the 49ers program.

“They were recruiting freshmen so they had a plan, and we had really good quarterbacks and coaches,” he said. “For me personally, it was a great experience and a great time. We had quarterbacks like Todd Dillon (1983), Doug Gaynor (1984-85) and Jeff Graham (1986).

“I was a tailback in high school and all I really knew how to do was run. I certainly wasn’t a blocking fullback; I always felt sorry for the other back when I was asked to block. but coach (Mike) Sheppard used split backs and liked to throw to his backs. It was a matter of finding a place in the system.”

After a redshirt year, he became a starter in a two-back set and would lead the team in rushing two of his four seasons. in 1983, he ran for 367 yards and had 42 receptions for 330 yards in an 8-4 season that saw the 49ers under Dave Currey beat Kansas State, Hawaii and San Diego State. the four losses were by a total of 22 points.

His numbers grew under Sheppard the next three seasons. he ran for 459 yards and had 59 catches in 1984 (ninth nationally) in a 4-7 season that included close losses to Oregon (11 points), UCLA (6), Fresno State (3) and Arizona (7).

He had 62 receptions in 1985 and ranked 11th nationally during a 6-6 season. in 1986, he ran for a career-high 500 yards – his career average per carry was 5.2 – and had 99 catches for 685 yards, giving him 262 career catches to pass Twilley and earn All-American notice.

He had a 15-catch day against UCLA that earned him some national notice and ran for 162 yards a week later in a win over Cal State Fullerton. his big day was a school-record 18-catch, 173-yard effort against Utah State, which left him within reach of Twilley if he maintained his current per-game pace.

He needed 20 catches in his last two games for the record. after being limited to five receptions in the penultimate game, he had 15 in the season finale against Pacific. he had 12 going into the final quarter and notched no. 262 in the final two minutes of the 38-21 win.

His 262 career catches, 99 catches in a season and 18 in a game, against Utah State in ’86, are all 49ers records. he ranks sixth on the all-time 49ers rushing list, behind three players who played in the NFL – Leon Burns, Terry Metcalf and Herb Lusk – and first in receptions. his 3,461 career all-purpose yards are also the most in Long Beach State history.

“Mark was one of the most modest young men to play college football,” Sheppard said after Templeton broke the record. “He was extremely reliable and durable. It may sound trite, but he was the model athlete, the kind of guy you want your son to grow up like.”

When he left college, the program had just been saved by a fundraising effort, so he was saddened when financial issues led to the program being shuttered five years later.

“I thought we had gotten over the hump, so I was shocked when it went down,” said Templeton, who had a fleeting NFL moment with Denver in the 1987 strike season.

He moved to Boise when he began a family in the late ’90s and has watched the slow rise of the Broncos program, from a team that once shared space with the 49ers in the Big West – the 49ers and Templeton beat Boise State in 1985 – to a team that has become one of the most successful programs in the nation despite operating outside the BCS system.

“It’s a good example of what can happen to a program,” he said. “When I first got here, it reminded me of the 49ers – a good program with good players who were smaller or maybe a step slower than the major schools. They’ve been able to run it together into something special.”

His 16-year-old son plays high school football and has aspirations to play college ball, perhaps at Boise State.

“He’s already bigger than me,” Templeton said. “He’s also a center, so I have no information to help him.”

At least now, his son can play catch with his dad knowing pop was once the best receiver the NCAA ever had.

LaBarge brothers reunite at Wash. U.

No Comments 04 November 2011

1320395776 61 LaBarge brothers reunite at Wash. U.

Brothers Chris and Trevor LaBarge have united on the Wash. U. football team this year. Trevor transferred from Case Western after making all-UAA last season.

Ever since they can remember, Chris LaBarge and Trevor LaBarge have been playing football together.

Chris, a senior defensive back with the Bears, started his collegiate career at Drake University, an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision school, before being redshirted. after his freshman year, he transferred to Washington University. Trevor, on the other hand, began his collegiate career at the University of Colorado, an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision school in the Pac-12 conference, before transferring to Case Western Reserve University, a member of the University Athletic Association. after his sophomore year, he transferred to Wash. U., where he is now a running back.

The two are very different. Chris is outgoing whereas Trevor is more reserved. Though the pair does not look alike, either, at the end of the day they are best friends.

The brothers reminisce about playing one-on-one tackle football in their basement as little kids. “There was a lot of blood at the end of the night,” Trevor said, chuckling.

They originally played for their father, an offensive line coach, before playing at Chaminade College Prep School. both were captains in their senior years, which was the first time that brothers captained a team in successive years at their high school.

“At a young age both of us played offensive line, but we never really got big enough to continue playing offensive line. our dad demands a lot from us; he is really proud of our accomplishments. he comes to all of our games still,” Chris said.

With three athletic sisters, including Chris’ twin, who plays field hockey at Saint Louis University, the LaBarges always had a positive, competitive dynamic.

“It is great to have someone so close to my age to compete with. We always try to one-up each other whether it be grades or football,” Chris said. “At the same time, however, I want him to do really well. when we played last year he had a career game with 21 carries and 117 yards, but Wash. U. still won.”

Despite initially playing at Division I schools, the LaBarge brothers both missed the Midwestern feel of St. Louis. most of all they missed playing together.

“In my last high school game I was most devastated that it could be the last football game I played with my brother. You don’t really know what you [have] got until it is gone,” Chris said.

“We really didn’t understand the significance of playing together when we were younger,” Trevor added.

After knowing football head coach Larry Kindbom before their arrival on campus, Wash. U. seemed to be the school destined for the brothers’ reunion.

“Coach K. is an icon over here. he is someone I always wanted to play for,” Chris said.

Though Chris transferred and Trevor enrolled in another school, the brothers still stayed in constant contact with each other. Despite Trevor being second team all-UAA fullback at Case Western, he was always focused on coming to Wash. U.

“My biggest accomplishment at Wash. U. was actually getting into the school. I previously got rejected a couple times,” Trevor said. “At the end of the day I always wanted to come here because I was born and raised in St. Louis. St. Louis is home, Wash. U. is home, and home is where the heart is.”

Despite the academic and athletic challenges at Wash. U., the two brothers have continuously pushed themselves to achieve high marks on and off the field.

The LaBarges have a clear friendship that surpasses many brotherly relationships. before every game the two usually hug each other and give each other handshakes. Their family loves this dynamic and attends every game.

The brothers still get competitive with each other in practice, even though they are now on the same team.

“We go against each other in practice a little bit. some of the coaches say we go easy on each other. after going against each other we give each other high fives,” Chris said. “Playing together has made our relationship better. Playing with Trevor is a dream come true. At the end of the day there is no one I care about more.”

In a victory over Wooster on Oct. 15, the LaBarges accounted for all of the Bears’ touchdowns, as Chris returned a fumble on a kickoff 11 yards for a score, and Trevor had two one-yard touchdown runs.

“It was pretty cool that we did that, but we just cared more that we won,” Chris said.

Although their family may be worried that the two only have two games left together, Chris is a redshirt and has another year of eligibility. Since he will be enrolled in a Masters in the Business School for Accounting, there is a chance that we will see the pair playing together next year.

The numbers on the right, where present, correspond to known sales numbers. Bolded titles correspond to Nintendo exclusives.

*This number is extrapolated from known numbers and a Sony press release.

Apparently, dropping the price of a system by 32% is quite the sales motivator. According to Nintendo, the 3DS saw a 260% increase in sales after the price drop, compared to the same period in July; combine those results with upcoming holiday titles, and I think we can expect to see a solid performance from the 3DS this holiday. It makes me wonder if the second analog pad was really necessary at all; I think Nintendo panicked and tried to overcompensate for lackluster sales.

Just Dance continues to be a profitable series, and people still love playing Ocarina of Time, as expected. The Wii could really use a shot of energy right now, which it should get around the holidays with the releases of games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, but I’m not sure it will be enough. On another note, I’m impressed at the success of the Phineas and Ferb game; clearly the show is more popular than I thought. The performance of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is also good to see, as the original series got a lot of acclaim and it sounds like this newest entry still keeps the feel of the original.

NCAA Football 12

 NCAA Football 12

I waited about as long as I could before picking up EA Sports latest college football game — NCAA Football 12. I wasn’t quite sure that I wanted to fork over $60 for a game that might not be that much of an improvement over the previous one.

It would be nice if you could receive a discount for future games when you buy an EA Sports game. Let’s say you own NCAA Football 11, why not issue some sort of code one can use in the future to order the next version, maybe dropping the price from $59.99 to $39.99. I know it won’t happen, but it’s a nice idea to think about!

Much of the game is like previous versions. Recruiting is similar, game play is similar, and graphics are similar. You’ve got Brad Nessler and Kirk Herbstreit calling the games. Lee Corso used to be in the group, but I think he’s been absent for the past few years. The game’s interface is improved.

There is a “Road to Glory” feature, where you are a player, starting out in high school and eventually moving on to college. I haven’t tried it and probably won’t. my concern is the dynasty. Right now I’m playing with Minnesota (I’m 3-0).

I’ve never been too solid in the recruiting game in the past, usually letting the AI handle it after awhile. if you’re just looking to play a game, it does take a little time to get through the recruiting aspect of it.

Having only made it through week three, I haven’t done much on the recruiting side, except fill my recruit board (you need to add 35 players to it), make phone calls, offer scholarships, and determine what each player likes/dislikes.

And that’s pretty much it. I will chime in from time to time, letting you know how my season is going.

EA Sports NCAA Football 12 x Nike Trainer 1.3

EA Sports NCAA Football 12 x Nike Trainer 1.3

words // Nick Engvallimages // Nick DePaula

Nike and EA Sports have worked together on a number of occasions, but one of the most popular was the Nike Trainer 1.2 x Tim Tebow colorway, inspired by the Florida Gators team colors. This year’s edition of the collaboration for the popular NCAA Football video game doesn’t have a single face that inspired the colorway, but rather something that is important to college football players on all levels.

For NCAA Football 12, which released in July, they created this unique version of the Nike Trainer 1.3 inspired by the varsity jacket. A combination of chenille, wool and leather – materials traditionally found on letterman jackets – are combined in a unique way on this version of the Nike Trainer 1.3. As can be expected, EA Sports graphics take their place on the shoe, the company logo on the tongue and matching details underneath the clear outsole. the black-based colorway keeps it simple, yet allows the material choices and Air Max cushioning in the heel to really shine through as the highlights of the Trainer 1.3.

Upcoming NCAA Football 12 Patch Details

Upcoming NCAA Football 12 Patch Details

It took three weeks but EA Sports has finally responded to the issues in NCAA Football 12 by releasing details on the upcoming patch. Expected to be out by the end of August the patch will address the severe problems that have been documented such as the broken custom playbooks, player tendencies flipping in edited rosters, injuries not carrying over week-to-week in Online Dynasty, random freezes, and more.

Overall the update’s intention seems to be to fix all the problems rather than providing improvements to gameplay – though the advertised “tuner sets” could still accomplish that if they decide to release any. Continue on to check out all the details of the patch.

•Custom PlaybooksWith this Title Update the missing play issue that led to a number of problems when using Custom Playbooks has been fixed. not only is the issue fixed, but you will not need to recreate your playbooks! any existing playbook will have the fix applied, and you will be able to continue using that playbook without issue.

•TendenciesAs with the Custom Playbooks resolution, the fix to the issue of edited player tendencies changing will not negate any previously edited roster file. the fix will be applied to both those existing files, as well as any new roster file that is created.

If you are in a Dynasty or Online Dynasty you will not need to restart as long as your Dynasty is still in year one and you have not advanced past “Training Results” in the off-season. if you are before this point, the update will be applied to your existing Dynasty/Online Dynasty and the tendencies will be correct for all players going forward. if you are in year two and beyond, the tendency issue impact will be less and less as the players graduate/are cut from the rosters.

In addition to the tendencies issue, we have also included both the ability to edit height and weight for players, as well as the option to edit the rosters of CPU controlled teams. In an Online Dynasty the commissioner will have the ability to edit the rosters for other human controlled teams. these were both big requests from you in the community.

Finally, a bug was fixed with the profanity filter that was preventing many common names from being entered. now, any name can be entered, for offline use. a profanity filter is applied to Online Dynasty when the Dynasty is created. if you prefer to opt out of this filter, you can set the Dynasty to Private and the profanity check will not run.

•Freezes/CrashesA major focus for this Title Update was to address any freezes/crashes that were found. there were a number of these issues fixed in this Title Update including a crash that occurred when there were multiple TeamBuilder teams in an Online Dynasty, as well as a crash that occurred during the downloading of an Online Dynasty file.

•GameplayIncreased the acceleration of QB’s on Speed Option plays.Improved WR blocking, especially on option playsFixed an issue where defenders assigned to play the curl to flat/buzz zone did not engage immediately when the QB scrambles past the LOS.Fixed an issue where safeties with inside deep ¼ zone would drop back instead of read-and-react on run plays.Fixed an issue in Nickel Cover 3 where the flat zone defender didn’t move as the QB was running at them.Fixed an issue with Double Outs from 4-2-5 Normal where the RLB wasn’t blocked properly vs. certain formations.

•HighlightsFixed an issue that caused a blank photo to be uploaded leading to issues with other highlights being uploaded.

•DynastyFixed an issue in Online Dynasty where injured players did not remain injured when the week advanced.Fixed an issue where a player’s injury time was only reduced by one week when going from Conference Championship week to Bowl Season. Players will now be back for their Bowl game if they should be off of the IR when their bowl game is played.Fixed an issue where coaches that changed jobs could get stuck in a state where they were still listed as coaching at their old school on the Players Leaving screen, leading to a Transfer Failed issue.Fixed an issue that occasionally prevented Dynasties from advancing to the post season.Fixed an issue with the schedule that prevented entering the Virginia Tech vs. Boston College game (fixed for both Dynasty and RTG).Fixed an issue where recruiting related trophies/achievements were not unlocked properly if you signed an extension in that season.Fixed an issue with Program Stability where the grade would drop from A+ to D+ in one season.Fixed an issue with the Unlock All Promises PDLC not unlocking properly on the Dynasty website.when viewing an Online Dynasty invite, added information to show what type of job can be selected by default.Fixed an issue when in the off-season where player stats did not match up between the web and console.

•Road to GloryFixed an issue where CB’s could not audible after earning the ability to do so through Coach Trust.Fixed an issue where HB’s could not flip the play after earning the ability to do so through Coach Trust.

•OnlineFixed an issue where player’s online stats were not displaying promptly on the Online Leaderboards.

•Week Advance AnywhereAs a token of our appreciation, we’re happy to announce that as of today “Week Advance Anywhere” on the web is now available for use, and that this feature will be FREE for everyone to use.
