the right Persona I’ve decided that I’m going to start playing the Persona games but I’m not really sure where to start. I’ve been looking around the Internet and it’s easy to pick up Personas 2 and 3 for PSP but I’ve seen Persona 4 for PlayStation 2 on Play.com for just over £10 but I have never bought anything from there before and I’m not sure about parting my cash with them. Any help would be fantastic on which to start with, I know you have said Persona 3 would be best to start on PSP but any extra information would be great, also Play.com are selling Fallout: New Vegas for Ł8.99 which is a great deal if any readers don’t have it yet. Dougall678    GC: actually the PSP version of Persona 3 is notably inferior to Persona 3 FES on the PlayStation 2. We’d go for either that or Persona 4, the first two games should be skipped unless you find yourself really getting into the series. Pros and cons Excellent feature on review scores GC. I am totally with you when you say people just read the score at the bottom and judge the game from it without reading the full review. (Then bitching about a 7/10 score of their favourite series.) Personally I only read the full review if it is a game I have looked forward too and on the edge of buying, like I did with Modern Warfare 3 which fully deserved a 9/10. I read the In Short for all other games and if it interests me then I read the full thing. the In Short is perfect for a quick summary to read first to decide if it’s the type of game I like and the full review to finalise the purchase. we don’t really need a score, take it out I say. big Angry Dad82 (gamertag) I disagree with a point you made in the Midweek Feature about scoring a game on how much it fulfils it potential. After all, how do you gauge a game’s potential? With demos/betas (which often don’t reflect the final game) or previews/media coverage (which might generate hype which games can’t possibly live up to)? However, I completely agree that the actual text of the review is the important part, and I personally avoid looking at the numerical score at the bottom of your review pages after reading the review itself. teh_zombie_jeff (PSN ID) PS: how about hiding the review score and having a Teletext-style reveal button to make it appear. Oh, nostalgia…PPS: I cuss you bad! GC: It’s not an exact science, nothing in reviewing is, but if a game has some glaring faults or missing features we’d say that was a pretty clear indication its potential hadn’t been fulfilled. Childish obsession to be honest I find this obsession over review scores a little pathetic. Why do so many gamers have to be sidetracked by trivial things like this and arguments over which piece of plastic is the best? Having this as a topic of discussion is one thing, but letting a game’s mark affect you is ridiculous. the fact is (and should always be), if you enjoy a game that’s all that matters. I’m aware very few will get the same enjoyment out of Superman Returns that I did but you know what, I don’t care. the poor review scores have zero effect on my own enjoyment. just enjoy the game and – as others have said – understand the context of reviews. 9/10 for FIFA will mean nothing if you hate football games. some people need to grow up Ty Conlon HD for the ears RE: bigjon69. You can’t go wrong with the TurtleBeach PX5, excellent surround sound for games and movies, wireless with no interference (not mine anyway) and as you’re a PlayStation user they have built in Bluetooth for chat. the X41 are the same but white with no Bluetooth, so chat can only be done through Xbox. However, they are considerably cheaper. I previously had  a pair of Tritton AX Pro which have four speakers in each ear but I didn’t think the surround sound effect was anywhere near as good as the Turtle Beaches. maybe due to the Dolby headphone technology incorporated into the Turtle Beaches. Also there are so many wires to mess around with it became a hindrance to use them. mark RE: Bigjon29 and gaming headsets. I agree, I’ve had the PlayStation Bluetooth headset and it was a bit rubbish, I bought the Turtle Beach P21s which were really good but only lasted just over a year, then the right speaker went chips. Since then, my girlfriend bought me the Tritton AX Pros for my birthday, which are all kinds of awesome. They have a detachable mic, four speakers per cup giving surround sound, separate game and chat volumes, really good bass and have saved my hide in call of Duty more times than I can remember as the sound is that good. thing is, they may be near to the £100 limit. Funtimefitzy For the chap wanting to know about the best game headphones, deffo try the Turtle Beach X41s.the sound upgrade over a TV is unreal.  I’d go as far to call it HD for the ears. Flemmo (PSN ID) RE: Bigjon29. I would like to recommend to you the Gioteck EX-05 Wired Stereo Headset for PlayStation 3, Xbox360 and PC, at dare i say it GAME. It comes with an ultra lightweight headband, sturdy metal adjusters, breathable full-size ear cups (they sit around the ear, opposed to on them) providing comfort, great sound quality, 4m cable and are multiplatform…. the price is £69.99 or £34.99 when bought with anything else in store (gind something for 1p pay £34.99). However, they do have a PlayStation 3 only version for £30. GC Addict PS: Skyrim, FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3. I’m set for the long cold winter nights, Good times.PPS: Battlefield 3, it’s a 9 from me. It has hands down the best multiplayer. big smiley face.

Warning: satire ahead I’m the best at Modern Warfare 3! Each match, I average 14-16 racial slurs, 25+ homophobic insults, around 10 accusations about people’s moms and over 60 really bad swears. I’m especially good at shouting at my gibbering, acne ridden, Red Bull-swigging, Haribo-fuelled teammates when I accuse them of stealing my kill. I hope Modern Warfare 4 gets rid of all that shooty stuff so I can concentrate on the real, core gameplay; verbally assaulting 12 year old American boys with whiny, Justin Bieber voices and making them cry. Also, if Infinity Ward read this, there is a problem; I like to play drum & bass music as loudly as possible, this means that I also have to scream as loudly as possible to get my insults across. Please fix this. and get rid of the’mute button so everybody can hear my Wildean banter. iPwnU (gamertag)/SirShoot-A-Lot (PSN ID) I really wish Uncharted 3 had had some sections where Drake tries to grab a ledge but then there’s a cut scene and the ledge brakes. CrackCity_Rocker (PSN ID) mr Pound It’s been a great few weeks for gaming and thanks to a fortunate £500 win on the health lottery I have been able to buy rage, Pro Evolution Soccer 2012, John Lomu Rugby Challenge, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, and I still have Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Saints Row: the Third to get next week. Best £1 I ever spent. David Clixby Out of control I recently tried my hand at the Uncharted multiplayer as I don’t want to finish the single-player too quickly, only to find that when I play online for about 20 minutes my character freezes or spins round on the spot. I have to quit the game completely to get control back. I thought at first it was a one-off until it happened again and again. Has anybody else suffered this problem? I thought today’s update would fix it but it hasn’t, I don’t have problems with any other online game. Petchfection84 (PSN ID) the only difficulty I have with dark Souls is the gradual realisation that, no matter how many I smash, no matter how many I roll through, no vase or crate will ever, ever, yield any items. mr Understanding is it just me, or does the normally thoroughly enjoyable GC daily Inbox become completely redundant when a call of Duty/AAA shooter game gets released? College Football Recruiting: Which 2012 Classes Are Packing The Most Punch?

No Comments 12 November 2011

1321139141 63 College Football Recruiting: Which 2012 Classes Are Packing The Most Punch?

Which recruiting classes are likely to fall come signing day, and which schools have a chance to rise up in the rankings when the ink is dry? A look at the most overrated and underrated classes of the 2012 cycle to this point.

Nov 10, 2011 – Recruiting rankings are based on the quality of the players in the class, as well as the size of the class. they are pretty accurate at the end of the year when all classes are finished, but with several months left before signing day, some classes are only half-full. Right now, it’s like a stagger-start race, tough to tell who is really in front until the home stretch. Granted, the rankings sites don’t claim that their team rankings are perfect at this point in the year, but many arguments pop up on message boards rooted in these rankings.

We’ll use Rivals.com for this analysis, because the data is easily sortable. this allows us to see how well a team is doing without being influenced by the size of the class.

Bloated Classes

These teams look good in the traditional ratings because they have so many players, but will slide as signing day approaches and other teams sign more players. they don’t have a high quality of player, on average, than classes ranked far below them.

The Miami Hurricanes currently have the 10th-rated class by Rivals, but they rank just 22nd in player quality. 19 of the Canes’ 25 commitments rate as three stars or fewer. this is a good class, but is not among the elites so far, and it is difficult to see this class staying in the top 10.

The Arizona State Sun Devils come in with a top-30 class (29th) per the traditional rankings, but are just 42nd in player quality. the Sun Devils do have three unranked players (see disclaimers, below), but of the 21 that have been rated, 18 are rated as three stars or fewer. With 24 commitments, this class is almost finished and is unlikely to rise in the rankings as other teams continue to add players.

Purdue has almost the exact same profile as Arizona State (top-30 class without being top-40 in the player quality rankings). With 22 commitments, Purdue is just about done, and has yet to land a single 4-star player.

Our final two come from the state of Virginia. the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Virginia Cavaliers both have top-20 classes (12th and 18th, respectively). Yet both will likely struggle to remain in the top 20 because of the lack of quality, as Virginia Tech ranks just 31st in player quality and Virginia places 45th. These aren’t bad classes, but they aren’t worthy of the hype being given to them as this point, as the high rankings result mostly from class size and not elite talent. the Hokies, however, seem better positioned to add elite talent down the stretch than the ‘Hoos, with tackle Korren Kirven and athlete Joel Caleb giving serious consideration to playing in Blacksburg.

Quality Over Quantity

How about teams doing an excellent job on a per-player basis, but which aren’t receiving much ranking love so far because of small class size? These teams should continue to improve as they sign more prospects, assuming they keep up the level of quality.

With an eight-man class, the California Golden Bears are just 37th in Rivals’ rankings. But they are seventh on a per-player basis, as half of those eight are rated as four stars or better. if Cal keeps this level of quality and closes strong, the Bears will rocket up the rankings.

Staying in the Pac-12, the Oregon Ducks rate just 35th with an 11-player class. Oregon is 14th in player-quality, however, with 5 of its 11 commitments rated as four stars or better. the Ducks traditionally finish strong and it would be a shock if they don’t finish in the top 25 when the ink is dry.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ 12-man class comes in 28th. But there are some excellent players on this list, and six of the 12 are rated as four stars or better. on a per-player basis, Wisconsin is 10th nationally, which is much better than that to which Badger fans are accustomed. Plus, new commitment Reggie Love is currently unranked and should receive at least a three-star rating. if Wisconsin keeps this up, it could push for one of the 20 best classes in the country.

Houston Nutt is out, and coaching the Ole Miss Rebels is not an easy task with Bama, LSU, Auburn and Arkansas in the same division, but the new coach will have some talent to work with. Nutt’s 2011 class was already showing promise on the field, and this current crop is underrated as well, coming in at 40th. on a per-player basis, however, the Rebs come in at 24th. this 11-player class is extremely small by Mississippi standards, but if Ole Miss can maintain the level of quality while adding quantity, this class could sneak into the top-30. Can Ole Miss quickly make a hire and keep its small, but talented class together?

You wouldn’t know it by its 50th ranking, but the jump to the Pac 12 seems to be paying off for the Utah Utes, as they rank 36th on a per-player basis. Utah doesn’t plan to take a huge class this year, and sits at just 12 commitments, but if they can get to 18 prospects while maintaining the currently level of quality, they should rise considerably in the final ranks.

The USC Trojans are limited by NCAA sanctions, but they are doing a great job filling the limited spots they do have. Sitting at 15th with an 11-man class, USC ranks second on a per-player basis. Nine of 11 commitments rate as four stars or higher. they can add at least four more players and should be able to maintain that top-15 ranking.

The Louisville Cardinals aren’t making as much of a splash this cycle as they did last season, but Charlie Strong is still just that – strong in the recruiting game. Louisville’s class comes in at 47th in the traditional rankings, but on a per-player basis, it is 37th. and while only 2 of the 14 commitments rate as four stars or better, this is arguably the best class in the big East. Strong closed well on signing day last season, and picked up commitments from several talented kids who stubbornly thought they would receive committable offers from top BCS programs that never materialized.

Disclaimers:

  • Specialists (kickers, punters and long snappers) rarely receive a high ranking. thus, taking multiple specialists in a single class could negatively impact the rating. Yet as we saw with Alabama the other night, they are oh so necessary.
  • Some players are still yet to be ranked. there are relatively few at this point, but they do exist and a player still needing evaluation will drag down the average a bit.
  • Offensive linemen are sometimes not as highly rated as their skill-position counterparts. they are often difficult to evaluate and don’t sell subscriptions. A class could be slightly underrated if it takes significantly more linemen than the other teams on the list. That’s rare, however, as all teams need linemen.
  • Many kids will not make it into school due to grades, test scores, etc. it is way too early to speculate on matters of this nature and I have not removed certain kids who I believe (but do not know for certain) will struggle to make the grades.

Zumba Fitness 2 out this month

1320692775 75 Zumba Fitness 2 out this month

One of the year’s bestselling games will get a sequel in just a few weeks.

505 Games has confirmed with MCV that it has officially signed up the rights to Zumba Fitness 2 for Wii. The game will debut on November 25th. a Kinect version will arrive in Q1 2012.

This year Zumba Fitness was UK All Formats no.1 ten times. It has been the no.1 best-selling Wii game for 26 weeks, and is on the verge of tipping past the 1m sales barrier in the UK.

Select retailers have already been pre-briefed about the new game, and “there is massive excitement amongst retail about the prospect of a second version,” according to 505 Games’ GM for UK and Export Ralph Pitt-Stanley.

The game is licensed from the popular Zumba fitness dance craze which has 10m class participants every week.

Zumba has stood out in a sea of dance games that rushed to market after Ubisoft’s just Dance and its spin-offs took off.

“Zumba Fitness differs to other games on the market,” added Pitt-Stanley. “It isn’t just a dance game, it is a fun interactive, social exercise experience that fuses contagious Latin and international rhythms together. It is this fun element that resonates with the consumer and the key reason for its success.”

505 Games teased details about the sequel with a high-profile ad during last weekend’s X Factor.

“Having gained extensive insight into our target audience, X Factor was a prime show to talk about the success of the original game and highlight the release date for Zumba 2,” said Pitt-Stanley. “We will launch Zumba 2 with a highly targeted campaign to get the message out there for the festive period.”

Peyton Hillis: Madden Curse and Cleveland Browns RB’s 5 Biggest Myths Debunked

No Comments 07 November 2011

1320681973 49 Peyton Hillis: Madden Curse and Cleveland Browns RBs 5 Biggest Myths Debunked

Peyton Hillis was dealt to the Cleveland Browns for chump change.   A slew of injures to the Browns’ running back corps and Hillis was given an opportunity.

It isn’t his fault he excelled or how he managed to do so.

But, he did.

His cult-like fan following on the internet landed him as the Madden NFL 2012 cover athlete.

A running back from the Cleveland Browns, a 5-11 team, Hillis  didn’t win that honor due to inflated statistics.  He did so because he played hard-nosed football.  Because of this toughness he made a name for himself as one of the most punishing backs in the NFL.

Unfortunately for Hillis, people have short attention spans and even shorter memories.

For those of you that will continue to hype the “Madden curse” angle, please listen up.

Hillis has not suffered a season ending injury or contracted anything close to the alleged curse from the Madden cover.  He had an illness followed by a hamstring injury (the same injuries he had in the years before 2011).  He’s also a workhorse running back making $600,000.00 a year and currently playing well above that level.

Let’s not forget 2011 is a contract year for Hillis.

If you believe in superstition instead of chance, continue spreading the “Madden curse” tale.  However, if 20 years from now the Madden NFL video game still exists, you will likely see how flawed the curse really is with a bigger sample to analyze.

One more piece of food for thought: Michael Vick lost the Madden 2012 voting.  how is his 2011 NFL season going right now?  how about the Eagles?

Bad things happen to players every year.  Attributing it to a “Madden curse” is an easy way out from looking at the real problem at hand.

Boomerang Mario Heading to Super Mario 3D Land – News – Nintendo World Report

1319729605 67 Boomerang Mario Heading to Super Mario 3D Land News Nintendo World ReportTalkback

Hey!  This is kind of a spoiler, no?  You could easily have said "new Mario power up revealed" and let us decide if we wanted to know the details or not.

I guess as official art we will see several things like this. It would be nice to have not known though. As a child I always dreamed of a boomerang suit. Exactly like this. Now that it's here I don't know what else to dream about.

Quote from: IanHey!  This is kind of a spoiler, no?

Really? A spoiler? in a Mario game? are you serious? Here's another one: The princess is in another castle.

I love when Nintendo introduces new koopa characters not names Bowser Jr. This new boomerang girl looks like a fine addition. 2nd to my need for Ridley and Dixie in the next smash, please please please Sakurai give us new costumes like these! They don't need to affect powers I just want to use Bowser with a Tanookie tail! maybe we'll be able to customize looks as much as we want in the 3DS with all kinds of Nintendo universe gear.

Really? A spoiler? in a Mario game? are you serious? Here's another one: The princess is in another castle.

That was great.

Also, if you look at the art that features the Boomerang Boom Boom-ette, you can see a Mario's statue form from the Tanookisuit of Mario 3.  I don't know if it's just a reference, or if it actually plays a part in the game we haven't seen yet.

Given that the statue is Luigi, I'd say it's something substantial. my guess is that there's a green-striped leaf that gives you stronger Tanooki powers.

Good catch guys! I'm sure Luigi will be playable but does this mean we'll be able to turn into stone at some point? Edit:Not asking a Kytim type question, just trying to get people excited!

Quote from: IanHey!  This is kind of a spoiler, no?  You could easily have said "new Mario power up revealed" and let us decide if we wanted to know the details or not.

Technically it is, but most people are concerned only with story spoilers rather than gameplay spoilers. since Nintendo games often focus on gameplay over story, things like this are pretty common. It's a shame, but these days the only way to go into a game without advance knowledge is to stay off the Internet.

Quote from: AdrockIf the knowledge of the existence of something is a spoiler, then knowing anything about the game is inherently a spoiler. There's really no way around that if you want to know you want a game.

That's my dilemma. Fortunately, I already know I want Nintendo games like Mario, so I don't need to know many things.

Well, you could consider any game's hook or premise would be non-spoiler info while specifics would be spoilers. for instance, FLUDD in SMSunshine as part of the whole premise of the game isn't a spoiler. in Galaxy, the central concept is the planet thing, but knowing about Mario's new power ups (bee suit, ghost mushroom, etc) are added bonuses one would be surprised to see. This is one of those areas where games and movies share some stuff in common. Movie trailers have to sell you on the movie without giving away too much of the plot. Here, the plot is a spoiler, but in some movies plot is all there is. Studios have to give you some without giving away all of it.The line may be a bit fuzzy in both areas, but I think it's safe to say that this was kinda spoilery.

Mario stories are shit so there is no fear of spoilers there.  Nintendo will never pleasantly surprise me with a Mario plot twist.  As a result the specifics of the game like specific levels and power-ups are the only true surprises in a new Mario game.  It's fun to play the game and encounter a power-up and be surprised by it.  Well now that can't happen for Boomerang Mario because you put the specifics in the headline.if there was a Twilight Princess headline years ago that said "Link gets spinner item" wouldn't that have sucked?  that was an unexpected item to get and it would have been annoying to have that spoiled before the game came out in a way that one could not choose to avoid the article.

A break back below 1.3225 then may give the market more reason to continue the Bearish scenario. then if the market closes the week below 1.3145, we open up 1.3046, 61.8% retracement of the rally from June 2010 @ 1.1876 to May 2011 @ 1.4939.

A Continuing Correction: The market may extend the current correction ahead of the European Central Bank meeting Thursday. The resistance at 1.3380 to the 1.34 psychl pivot is very important. A break above this targets the 1.35-1.3520 pivot. The ability to close above this mark, seen as last week’s range’s Central pivot, suggests to me a more significant correction, opening up toward 1.37. if that breaks, the next mark is 1.3790, essentially reverting back to the 200 period (SMA) simple moving average seen int he 4-H chart below. Stay tuned…

NHL 12 Review – UGO.com

No Comments 03 October 2011

1317647137 55 NHL 12 Review UGO.com

A simple law dominates the sports Sim market: fans of the sport buy the game. Football fans buy Madden, basketball fans buy 2k and hockey fans buy NHL.  so let me assume that hockey fans already own NHL 12, are deep into their GM season, be a Pro, Online Leagues and the rest of the features. most of which are nice adornments to what is essentially the best hockey product released to market since NHL  94. Hockey fans already know this. The sports un-inclined, on the other hand, don’t. Largely, they don’t care either.

Here’s why they should. NHL 12 is closest a Sim has come to balancing the many of the intrinsic qualities that make a sport great and making that video game accessible. Tweaks in the physics allow the puck to ping pong more naturally than in any previous version. Tipping the puck in front of the net, deflections off the pass, battles for the puck in the corners all benefit from aforementioned adjustments. The goalie has human dimensions and pucks slip through pads or between the arm and the chest. Suddenly, the need for a parabolic wrist shot falls away. The dependence on the one-timer loses pace, much like hockey itself. Shots on net may actually go in and that’s a great thing for a new user picking up the controller for the first time. I want to play with my friends (and crush them but that’s something I’m working on with my therapist). I want them to feel like they can play (so I can crush them). I want them to like the game because hockey’s a great sport but more to the point, hockey video games are a hella fun to play. alongside FIFA, the NHL series has long been the most accessible video game for the non-fan to play.

In short, to become more accessible, the game became more real. It makes more sense to the barbarians not familiar with the particulars of hockey.  a check doesn’t feel like a block hitting a small block, but flesh smashing into flesh. Sometimes both the players fall, you feel the check in the check, the sound seems more realistic.

It’s a curious occurrence for a sports simulation game. Too close a simulation has often led to alienation of the casual fan.  Too much the other way and you have an arcade game that sensationalizes facets of the sport at the cost of others. NHL 12 captures what’s so great about the hockey and preserves what makes it so fun to play as a video game. Passes make sense, the puck makes sense, bodies smashing into each other make sense and the goalies make sense. these simple adjustments open up the game to the casual fan and reward the hardcore player as well.  Simply, it is the NHL title the gaming community will talk about years down the road and you, casual fan, should find out for yourself what makes NHL 12 so damn good.

Review roundup: Gears of War 3

No Comments 16 September 2011

Review roundup: Gears of War 3

Ahead of its worldwide release on Tuesday September 20th, the review embargo on Microsoft’s Gears of War 3 has been lifted.

And it probably won’t be the biggest surprise in the world to discover that the praise has been unanimous.

Here are a few snippets from a number of the first reviews:

Gears of War 3 has left me with a parallel set of emotions. on one side, it represents a powerful elegy, a close to a series that has done much to define this console generation. It’s a melancholy thing, seeing a solid conclusion for characters that a lot of us liked despite ourselves, that make themselves even more understood in the end. But Gears of War 3 does it with respect and grace, and even subtlety, for a fantastic experience from start to finish. And it bestows a postscript of one of the most full featured, fun, and polished multiplayer experiences I’ve ever played. Gears of War 3 has finally kept the promise the series made six years ago, and then some.

Gears Of War 3 is a robust gaming package. Aside from the multiplayer and campaign modes – the latter of which can also be tackled in co-op or in arcade mode – this game is filled to bursting with unlockables; ribbons, skins, weapons – everything players need to establish their online shooter credentials. if Gears Of War 3 is indeed this franchise’s swansong, Epic can rest easy knowing their world-conquering series ended on something of a high note. it really is one of this year’s essential titles.

There’s no doubt the series has grown with every instalment, and number three sees Epic at its unsurprisingly best. Original or not, the solo campaign is solid in every department and brim with class, while the versus, Co-Op, Horde, Beast and ambitious DLC plans should see Gears live on for years – even if this is the last time Epic has to use that chainsaw gun. For the record, we hope it isn’t.

Eurogamer – 8/10

So where do you go after “bigger, better and more badass?” You go to your fans and give them that which they crave. but now Epic has surely exhausted the formula in its current form – and, probably, on current-gen – the really exciting question is: where next?

A blockbuster in every sense of the word. Gears of War 3 absolutely screams ‘Hollywood’ and has the immersive action gameplay to match. Vastly improved from its predecessor, with an engaging multiplayer system that will make you gladly keep playing for months and months to come. one of the Xbox 360’s finest.

TheSixthAxis – 9/10

Gears of War 3 is the best in the series. While it doesn’t make generational leaps in terms of its visual presentation, and the multiplayer modes are more evolution than revolution, it adds a whole new layer of emotion to the dynamic. Gears has always been the best third person cover-based shooter available but now it rivals most other modern games in terms of narrative, characterisation and empathetic attachment. put simply, it’s a brilliant end to one of the finest trilogies in gaming.

Digital Spy – 5/5

Gears of War 3 could have quite easily become a predictable and by-the-numbers sequel, sticking to familiar mechanics and obvious additions, but pleasingly it does so much more.
