Violent video games hold hidden benefits

1320712562 21 Violent video games hold hidden benefits

When Australia banned the new Mortal Kombat video game in February for its excessive violence, the decision ignited debate over the function of violence in video games and whether they promote aggressive behavior in players.

The United States has had its share of speculation as well. In June, the United States Supreme Court rejected a proposal to ban the sale and rental of violent video games to underage children in California.

This hasn’t stopped violent video game production. every year, the best-selling video games in the United States are also some of the most violent. this year the nation’s best-selling games included the war-based Call of Duty: Black Ops and the more traditional fighter-game Mortal Kombat 2011.

October has brought us slick ambushes in Batman: Arkham City, and November promises first- and third-person shooters in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Uncharted 3.

With all these violent video games and no solid link to an increase in violent behavior — those that support the link have little convincing evidence — you’d think people would learn to stop stereotyping these games as so-called bad influences.

But parents can’t stop worrying about their children. Though it’s possible young players would be more prone to imitative violence, it’s important to remember the most violent games are rated mature for a reason. most adults aren’t going to start running around shooting people and stealing cars after a session of Grand Theft Auto. Violence is just a single part of video games’ overall entertainment value.

What regulators fail to recognize is how violent video games can actually benefit adult gamers.

For one, violent video games allow a player to enter and control a fantasy world to act out scenarios he or she otherwise wouldn’t.

“[A] teen can try out different identities — how it feels to be a hero, a trickster, a feared or scorned killer or someone of a different age or sex — in the safe fantasy world of a video game,” said Cheryl K. Olson in a New York Times article.

For older teenagers and adults, violent video games offer first-hand, mature-oriented adventures that fit their age better than those offered by non-violent children’s games. Violent video games allow for more direct interaction and control in environments significantly less structured than those found in movies, television shows and books.

Through the use of violence, video games can reduce stress by distracting adult gamers from the pressures of everyday life. College students attempting to juggle school, part-time work, finances and household chores, for example, might find button-mashing violence to be a safe and enjoyable way to release pent-up frustrations. According to a 2010 study conducted by Texas A&M associate professor Christopher Ferguson, violent video games can be used as therapeutic outlets for combat depression and anger.

With the popularity of violent video games, they have also become some of the best socialization tools. many violent video games are successful because they share an emphasis on multiplayer features. The best-selling Call of Duty franchise, for example, uses online combat in a familiar war-scenario to foster competitive, fun environments.

According to a study published in Psychology of Violence’s August issue, the degree of competitiveness in video games is more likely than the amount of violence to cause aggression in gamers. but how do we even measure competitiveness? how do we distinguish “safe” competitive environments from “unsafe” ones? If competitiveness can cause aggressive behavior, should people stop playing sports? or board games?

A little competition isn’t necessarily an instigator for aggressive behavior. In fact, it can be one of the safest and healthiest ways for people to learn to channel their energies and cooperate with others in a rule-based environment.

Though the violence in Black Ops is grittily realistic and might cause an outburst or two, players must use their competitive mindsets to work together to win. this ultimately establishes a team atmosphere in which people can communicate openly and form or disband parties as they please. these features dilute the violence factor and make the game more about strategy and camaraderie than about brute killing.

Violent video games might have a bad reputation, but this isn’t a good reason to deny the possible benefits reaped from playing them. After all, violence is everywhere these days — in movies, the news and on television — so why would video games targeted at having fun and relieving stress be the only form of entertainment stigmatized?

Here’s Another Problem With Retailer-Specific Preorder Items, Best Buy

1320228173 93 Here’s Another Problem With Retailer Specific Preorder Items, Best Buy

Twice has Best buy lured commenter I.Q.1 to its door with exclusive preorder goodness, and twice has he been denied. a cautionary tale, courtesy of Speak Up on Kotaku.

I just want to share how as a gamer I am extremely disappointed with the service Best buy has provided me in my last couple orders.

First off when Mortal Kombat was released a few months ago I had preordered the game from GameStop. once I found out that each retailer had different preorder bonus I looked into what each bonus was. GameStop had a classic scorpion costume and fatality where as Best buy had Classic Sub-Zero costume and fatality. Sub-Zero happens to be a favorite for me so I cancelled my order with GameStop and preordered Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition from Best buy. once the game was released and my copy showed up in the with a Classic sub Zero sticker on the box I was pumped, excited. I open the box and start installing the game on my Xbox.

While that’s going on I start going thru all the papers and booklets that came with the box/game. for some reason I couldn’t find my Classic Sub-Zero costume/fatality DLC Code. of course I thought this must be some sort of error so what I did was I went to the Best buy web site and under the contact us link there is a form to fill out . I filled out the form by providing all my info from the order and stating that there was content missing from my purchase in detail. Well needless to say I never heard back. I took to the web and found out that lots of people who order that game from best buy were in fact missing that DLC. of course I was hoping since I contacted you guys about it that it would be resolved but no. I never heard back. as upsetting as this was life went on and I completely forgot about the matter.

Well now another issue arises. once again I preordered a game from GameStop called Forza Motorsport 4: Limited Collector’s Edition about two, maybe three months ago. once I found out that again each retailer would get a different preorder bonus that being different in game vehicle and it turns out best buy to me had the better vehicle (BMW 1 Series M Coupe) so I preordered from Best buy and cancelled my GameStop order. this was almost a month ago and today October 7 I get this email from Best Buy

Thank you for your Forza Motorsport 4: Limited Collector’s Edition (sku 2953607) pre-order on BestBuy.com. Unfortunately, due to an overwhelming demand, Best buy is unable to fulfill your pre-order; as a result, your order will be canceled.

What I don’t understand is why Best buy would continue to take preorders if they don’t know exactly how many copies of the game they would be receiving. I tried going back to GameStop and they stopped taking preorders a week ago. also I checked Amazon, Microsoft Store and Wal-Mart and none of them are taking preorders for the Limited Edition. so now because of a mistake by Best buy I will miss out on all the Preorder bonus features I was so looking forward to. I’m very disappointed, another game ruined. I’ll never preorder another game thru Best buy again. There’s a comfort in knowing you have a game reserved/waiting for but now I will have the joy of tracking down this game which seems to be sold out everywhere. Thanks for nothing Best buy.

Warner Interactive looks to build on Arkham City’s success in 2012

No Comments 01 November 2011

1320148957 94 Warner Interactive looks to build on Arkham Citys success in 2012

With the new Batman video game Arkham City, a Hollywood studio may finally have a true interactive blockbuster and also the respect of notoriously skeptical gamers.

On sale today, Arkham City from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has garnered unanimously rave notices, ranking as the best reviewed video game of the year on the compilation site Metacritic. Sales expectations are well above the 4.3 million units that the game's predescessor, Arkham Asylum, sold in 2009. Pre-orders are twice as high, said the studio, as is interest among gamers, according to research firm Ipsos OTX.

Like many other media conglomerates, Warner and its parent company, Time Warner, have tried to build a successful video game business for years, initially with little success. But while others retrenched from or exited video games, Warner stuck with it. The studio best known for movies such as "The Hangover" and "The Dark Knight" spent hundreds of millions to acquire development talent and brands not closely tied to its movies.

That effort is creating very strong results this year. April's ninth Mortal Kombat game, which came from the studio's acquisition of Midway Games, was a solid hit, with more than 3 million units sold. Arkham is poised to be a blockbuster and expectations are high for November's Lego Harry Potter: Books 5-7. 2011 will bring Warner Interactive's nearly $1 billion in sales and be its most profitable year, said unit President Martin Tremblay (despite the failure of summer games F.E.A.R. 3 and Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, as well as more modest expectations for November's Lord of the Rings: War in the North).

Matching the 2011 performance next year will be difficult, Tremblay admitted, but the studio has several big guns in the works. The only game announced for 2012 is the downloadable title Gotham City Imposters (a Batman-related fighting game), but people familiar with the studio's plans who requested anonymity because the titles have not been announced confirmed several other games coming next year. They include a sequel to 2008 hit kids game Lego Batman, which will be released close to the movie "The Dark Knight Rises"; a Hobbit game that will likely launch several months before December movie "The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey"; and a game featuring an unidentified DC Comics superhero.

Nonetheless, Tremblay said, the company probably won't exceed $1 billion in video game sales until 2013. while no games have yet been announced for that year, sequels to both Mortal Kombat and Arkham City are likely among the key releases the executive has in mind.

NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are Most Intimidating?

No Comments 26 October 2011

1319614394 51 NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are Most Intimidating?

When we think of intimidating teams, usually the first thing that pops into our minds are the “meanest” of teams. But in regards to intimidation, just being mean doesn’t really hold that much weight.

Instead, intimidation should come in the form of a team that executes to the highest order, finds ways to win without their best players, and goes all-out every game regardless of their opponent.

Before you take the field, the intimidation factor should be knowing that you need to put up your A-game for 60 minutes, otherwise don’t even bother showing up for kickoff. Here, records don’t count.

Green Bay Packers (7-0)

Okay, so maybe records count a little bit, but regardless of how weak the Packers’ pass defense has been, can any team line up against them and say, “Yeah, we can beat them if we don’t go all-out.”

Their offense basically executes so flawlessly that by game’s end, Shao Kahn from Mortal Kombat should say “Flawless Victory!” over the loud speaker.

That’s how the Packers can get you. Say what you want about their pass defense, but this is a team that still won the Super Bowl despite having umpteen guys on the IR and went on the road throughout the 2010 postseason.

When the Packers want to, they will crush anyone who stands in their way, because right now they’re not even going all-out. Have you seen Aaron Rodgers sweating profusely after any games yet?

Houston Texans (4-3)

It was uncertain as to how the Houston Texans would play without WR Andre Johnson and LB Mario Williams. Well, so far, so good.

Obviously losing on the road to Baltimore hurt, but the Ravens play extremely well at home and Houston fought all game. As evidence, that effort carried over into last week and they pummeled AFC South rival Tennessee into submission with a 41-7 road win.

Houston still has a lot of work to do being that they’re only 4-3. But this is a team on a mission, because when they’re playing without ther best two players and still putting up a fight and/or dominating, no one will want to play them when Johnson returns.

In some sense, this is a team that has nothing to lose and everything to gain, because since they have injuries and have yet to make a postseason appearance, they’re honestly going somewhat under the radar.

Carolina Panthers (2-5)

They’re 2-5 and last place in the NFC South, so what makes the Carolina Panthers so intimidating?

Well for one, they go all-out more than any other team in the league. they have played four solid NFC teams in Green Bay, new Orleans, Chicago and Atlanta, and were in each game.

Rookie QB Cam Newton continues to prove skeptics wrong about his mechanics and so-forth. The defense, despite not having LB Jon Beason, is playing better than expected, and they just dominated a Washington Redskins team that had quite a few people on their bandwagon.

This is clearly a team on the rise, and don’t be surprised if the Panthers finish near a .500 record. They’re giving so much effort and playing with nothing to lose right now.

Their intimidation factor is like a poker player at the World Series of Poker Main Event who doesn’t care whether they get knocked out or make the money, because all he/she wants to do is play and force his/her opponents into thinking about not making mistakes.

That way of playing gives the advantage.

'Mortal Kombat' Video Game Headed Back to the Big Screen

mortal a l 'Mortal Kombat' Video Game Headed Back to the Big Screen

Mortal Kombat is heading back to the big-screen.

New Line is hiring the filmmakers of the popular Mortal Kombat digital series, made earlier this year by corporate sibling Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, to take on a new adaptation of the classic 1990s fighting game.

The movie deal marks the end of a journey for Kevin Tancharoen, who will direct the new film. Tancharoen, a choreographer for Madonna and Britney Spears who directed the 2009 remake of Fame and more recently the Glee concert movie, directed a short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth as a proof of concept for a Kombat movie he tried to pitch. a huge fan of the video game (and knowing Hollywood wouldn’t give him a shot at the title), he enlisted Oren Uziel to write the short and hired actors such as Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan.

The short was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube, and although no movie deal materialized, he was asked to direct the 10-episode web series, which debuted in April, attracting more than 50 million unique visitors.

Off that success, Warners and new Line execs thought it was time to try to revisit a big-screen effort. (New Line made a Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, which grossed more than $70 million domestically and helped launch a directing career for Paul W. S. Anderson. a follow-up movie in 1997, however, fizzled.)

Uziel is returning to write the new movie, which is still in the development stages. there is no actor attached and the new story will not serve as an extension of the game or digital series.

Dave Neustadter and Walter Hamada are overseeing for new Line.

The game’s long-standing appeal lies in being able to face off against an opponent, using various weapons and fighting styles, via human or alien avatars. the catchy title doesn’t hurt, either.

Tancharoen is repped by ICM and Anonymous Content. Uziel, who also wrote the Black List script Kitchen Sink, is repped by ICM and Circle of Confusion.

Warner Bros. is ready to produce the Mortal Kombat we’ve always wanted. The studio has given Mortal Kombat: Legacy’s Kevin Tancharoen the thumbs-up to direct a big-screen reboot. (In creepy MK announcer voice: excellent!)

Who do we have to thank for Warner Bros.’ renewed interest in Mortal Kombat? It’s a mix of Kevin Tancharoen and the obsessive fans who tuned in each week to his webseries Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Tancharoen’s vision of a less campy and more gritty MK world pleased viewers who were yearning for a darker adaptation. in other words, there was blood! Lots and lots of blood. Mortal Kombat: Legacy raked in 15 million viewers after it debuted in April, which was music to the studio’s ears. So they bit the bullet and decided to reinvest in the ’90s property. The good news is Tancharoen will return for the reboot; the bad news is none of the actors from the webseries are involved and it will be based on a new story written by Oren Uziel. The film is currently in development, so it’s too early to tell if any of the actors would even be open to reprising their roles. but if they do decide to tap into Legacy’s roster, Michael Jai White should be the first to return. He is a perfect Jax! Are you excited to see Mortal Kombat in theaters again? Who would you like to return?

Video Games Franchises That Don’t Need A Story But Attempt One Anyway

No Comments 12 October 2011

1318428321 28 Video Games Franchises That Don’t Need A Story But Attempt One Anyway

There are thousands of video games out there that make no pretense about having a story that the players should care about. Entire genres avoid story and plot, favoring natural emergent narrative and other such terminology over designer-driven experiences. That isn’t to say they are better or worse than their counterparts, but only to say that ludic and narrative elements aren’t always both present in video games.

That’s more or less to say that sometimes, a game is entirely about the game and not about the story behind it. the mechanics at play are what make the game what it is. But even then, developers often feel the need to add some kind of plot to their digital offspring. And so we arrive with a great many video game franchises that have a story, but don’t really need one.

1. Pokémon

At its core, Pokémon is a solid team-based battler. you build a team from scratch, with their own weaknesses and strengths, and pit them against other teams with rosters you’re unsure of prior to the battle. Given the ever-increasing number of potential team members, the combinations feel limitless.

However, Pokémon also tries to include a story about the most recent dastardly plot from the most recent vile organization that the player must help defeat. There’s also typically a rival that gets in the player’s way for the majority of the game, but sometimes turns over a new leaf, seeing the error of the ways due to the devotion of the player to their Pokémon. Wash, rinse and repeat. the franchises’ catchphrase, “Gotta catch ‘em all,” encapsulates what the franchise is all about, not the barebones story.

2. Gears of War

The release of Gears of War 3 prompted the creation of this list. more specifically, the release of the timeline for the series prompted its creation. As a franchise, Gears of War is a heavily polished cover-based shooter that has rightfully earned the trust of millions. whether you care for his particular brand of zeal or not, Cliff Bleszinski knows what he’s doing.

Which is partly why it’s so weird to see the timeline and be reminded just how ridiculous the plot for the franchise truly is. You’re fighting the big, horrific enemy that’s been decimating your populace only to find out that there’s been an even bigger, more horrific enemy that’s been fighting your original big, horrific enemy and drove them to fight you in the first place.

And another thing, if you need a timeline to explain your story to those who have been playing from the start, that doesn’t exactly speak well for the importance of your plot.

3. the Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls is rarely even associated with its actual franchise name. Instead, gamers refer to the different releases by their given subtitles; Morrowind is “Morrowind,” Oblivion is “Oblivion,” and so on. each game has its own lore that ties in with the rest of the games and goes back as far as the original. things change, of course, but mostly it’s additions.

The Elder Scrolls is also known for being breathtakingly rendered. the world is vast and largely explorable. That’s where a great majority of people find themselves: Exploring the great swaths of land presented before them. though it might have an intricate and detailed plot, I’d be hard pressed to relate to anyone exactly what goes on through the course of Oblivion other than “some demons invade and you have to make them go away.” Gamers tend to play games in the Elder Scrolls franchise as if they were MMOs — exploring the land and bettering their character, rather than salivating over story elements. A common badge of honor for gamers who play the Elder Scrolls series is how many hours they’ve played the game before actually beginning the very first central plot-related quest.

4. the Legend of Zelda

Before you grab your torch and pitchfork-shaped Hookshots, let me explain why the Legend of Zelda makes the list. in any given installment in the franchise, the individual story is nearly nonessential. it typically follows the same pattern: Gather weapons and items in order to defeat Ganondorf and save Zelda. Often, this has to do with the Triforce.

Sometimes, the stories branch off or have to do with the minions of Ganondorf, but for the most part, that’s about it. it rarely differentiates beyond that, and even when it does, the story is as basic as it gets. When it comes right down to it, folks seem to be more interested in the game for what it represents mechanically than the exact workings on its story.

5. Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is one of the few franchises that are on the fence. the sheer number of people who play the various iterations purely as a cause Havoc simulator is outstanding. If you were to fill a room full of people that I personally know that have played many an hour of Grand Theft Auto without ever actually completing the game, they all would die of suffocation soon after.

Despite all of this, Grand Theft Auto, especially the fourth installment, is lauded for its attempt at open world storytelling. There’s no disparagement meant here; it’s simply a commentary on the fact that most people don’t even realize it exists or is as satirical and often subtle as it really is. Truly, a game that attempts to have a story, but doesn’t quite need one since the majority of its players aren’t even aware — or don’t care — that it exists.

6. Mortal Kombat

I am perhaps ashamed to admit that I knew exactly what was going on at the end of the most recent Mortal Kombat game. Not only did I know what was going on, I knew precisely what events and outcomes had been changed from the previous timeline. That said, I’m certainly not in the majority here.

Over the years, many gamers have commented that they view the lore and story behind fighting games as a flimsy excuse to get interesting characters to viciously beat on each other. Tekken, Street Fighter and Soul Calibur could all easily have been included here instead of Mortal Kombat. But really, any game that tries to accurately explain why a blade-armed, fanged man from another dimension is fighting with a Shaolin monk invites skepticism.

1316840771 81 Mortal Kombat Sells Over Three Million Units WorldwidePress Release Source: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment On Thursday September 15, 2011, 10:00 am EDT

BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announces Mortal Kombat, the latest iteration of the legendary fighting franchise, has sold over three million units worldwide, making it the highest-selling fighting game this year.

Mortal Kombat, developed by NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon, launched on PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in April 2011. In addition to the full game available at retail, downloadable content (DLC) has been released for the game offering four warriors, including the return of fan favorites Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain and an all-new competitor in the coliseum – legendary dream stalker Freddy Krueger – who now features two vicious bladed gloves. Each DLC character comes with his or her own move set, arcade ladder story ending, and two deadly fatalities.

“We are very pleased with the success of Mortal Kombat, as it surpassed our expectations in becoming the #1 fighting game in North America released so far this year,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals. We’d like to thank our entire team and all of our partners for their innovative campaigns and tremendous support of Mortal Kombat, as the game sales continue to grow.”

“All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it.”

Mortal Kombat is a triumphant return to the game’s original mature presentation offering over-the-top fatalities and cringe-worthy X-ray moves. Going back to a 2D fighting plane, this latest iteration in the franchise introduces a number of new game-play features including Tag Team, Challenge Tower, and a deep story mode. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several players in the new online King of the Hill mode.

The legendary fighting game is now available in North America for $59.99 on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360.

That isnt entirly right, Skarlet was unfilled on my game for download when I woke up at 7:00 a.m. EST on the day she was released, but Kenshi on the other is still nowhere to be seen…particular PSN players have by now been able to download him for the past couple hours, and I have heard of select XBOX Live users able to do so, I reckon thy are rolling him out a small at a time to keep users from overloading the system. With a bit of luck we will see him today soon.
