The Best Way to Get Around in Infamous 2 Started Out As a Bug

No Comments 12 November 2011

1321061769 43 The Best Way to Get Around in Infamous 2 Started Out As a Bug

I’m in the middle of playing the new Infamous: Festival of Blood DLC, which gives series hero Cole McGrath all sorts of new powers by virtue of his getting in turned into a vampire. I talked a bit about the Shadow Swarm flying ability in my hands-on preview and when I was demoing the game, I mentioned that it reminded me of my favorite power in this year’s electric superhero sequel was the Lightning Tether. Lightning Tether lets Cole zip around the city of new Marais via electromagnetic tendrils, kind of like Spider-Man’s webs.

Upon hearing that, Sucker Punch’s Ken Schramm let me in on a secret, which is that Lightning Tether actually started as a bug during the development of Infamous 2. QA testers discovered that there were times when aiming and firing electric bolts at the environment would cause a glitch that yanked Cole forward. QA brought the quirk to the attention to the rest of the development team, who thought it was cool. The Car Lift power in the game came about the same way, as a result of things not working as originally intended.

Schramm point to these two features as part of the advantage of having internal Quality Assurance dept. if QA was handled externally, the glitches that became Lightning Tether and Car Lift would been killed, never to become the cool powers that made it into the game.

Why Buying Games at Launch Is a Fool’s Errand

No Comments 08 November 2011

1320793563 84 Why Buying Games at Launch Is a Fool’s Errand

2011 has been a crazy year for big-name game releases. recently, we’ve seen a new Battlefield game and Arkham City is already out. We’ve also got Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 coming out this week, and that’s just scratching the surface of all the great games that have either been released or will be on retail shelves in the next week or two.

Unless you have a huge budget for games — not to mention mountains of free time and a very understanding significant other — you’re going to have some hard choices to make.

We want to help. Buying games when they’re released is a scam: the prices of video games drop within weeks of release, and the second editions of games released to retail often include what used to be for-pay downloadable content. here are a few questions to ask yourself when trying to decide what games to buy now, and when to wait.

Is there a bunch of DLC already announced? More on the way?

Let me put this bluntly: it is my job to understand the ins and outs of video game launches, and I take this very seriously. I study press releases, I have good relationships with the people in retail who sell video games, and I talk to the publishers and developers behind those games on a daily basis. That being said, I have no idea which shop you needed to go to preorder Arkham City in order to get the Batman outfit where he’s wearing the diaper because Kevin Smith said Batman peed himself in one terrible issue of that comic that I never read.

The same thing happened with Mortal Kombat, a game that offered a ton of preorder exclusives, new characters, and classic fatalities you could get by buying it at certain retailers or paying extra.

You can buy the Gears of War 3 Season Pass right now for $30, and this will make sure you get every piece of for-pay DLC for the game the moment it comes out, even though you don’t really know what you’re buying yet. what we do know is that there is a good amount of DLC coming for the game, and if you buy it before you know what it is, you can save money. This isn’t rare these days.

But why pay for all this content now? there will come a time, most likely during the holiday season, when the publisher releases a version of the game that will come with all this DLC included in the package, and that whole mess will be likely be sold for less than the base game cost at launch. Imagine that! all you need is a little patience and you can get a much larger game, with much more content, for much less money. the more content has been announced, the higher the chances of all that for-pay stuff being collected for one last retail release so the publisher can squeeze the last bit of money from its game.

The rule is simple: the more DLC released for a title, the better the chances you’ll save money by waiting and buying the game when the entire thing is collected for retail. You can opt out of every stupid nickel-and-dime scheme just by waiting a few short months.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon DLC Release Date Confirmed

No Comments 04 November 2011

1320437169 98 Ace Combat: Assault Horizon DLC Release Date Confirmed

Namco Bandai Games has previously revealed plans for downloadable content (DLC) for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon following the coming launch, set for this Friday, 14th October in Europe, though early purchases of the videogame may find themselves equipped with more information than the casual observer. An automated assistance within the game itself reveals new details on the first DLC package set for release.

Upon booting up Ace Combat: Assault Horizon for the first time, once having reached the main menu players will be confronted with a message that reads: “Downloadable Content 1: available October 11, 2011 in the US and October 14, 2011 in the EU!”

The message then continues to state what the DLC will contain: “Featuring new aircraft skin F-15C “Death Rider”.”

Namco Bandai Games had already confirmed that DLC that will be made available shortly after launch, but here we see the developers, Project Aces, having clearly taken inspiration from the likes of Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age II by incorporating this information into the frontend of the videogame. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, including an in-depth review coming very soon.

Here’s Another Problem With Retailer-Specific Preorder Items, Best Buy

No Comments 02 November 2011

1320228173 93 Here’s Another Problem With Retailer Specific Preorder Items, Best Buy

Twice has Best buy lured commenter I.Q.1 to its door with exclusive preorder goodness, and twice has he been denied. a cautionary tale, courtesy of Speak Up on Kotaku.

I just want to share how as a gamer I am extremely disappointed with the service Best buy has provided me in my last couple orders.

First off when Mortal Kombat was released a few months ago I had preordered the game from GameStop. once I found out that each retailer had different preorder bonus I looked into what each bonus was. GameStop had a classic scorpion costume and fatality where as Best buy had Classic Sub-Zero costume and fatality. Sub-Zero happens to be a favorite for me so I cancelled my order with GameStop and preordered Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition from Best buy. once the game was released and my copy showed up in the with a Classic sub Zero sticker on the box I was pumped, excited. I open the box and start installing the game on my Xbox.

While that’s going on I start going thru all the papers and booklets that came with the box/game. for some reason I couldn’t find my Classic Sub-Zero costume/fatality DLC Code. of course I thought this must be some sort of error so what I did was I went to the Best buy web site and under the contact us link there is a form to fill out . I filled out the form by providing all my info from the order and stating that there was content missing from my purchase in detail. Well needless to say I never heard back. I took to the web and found out that lots of people who order that game from best buy were in fact missing that DLC. of course I was hoping since I contacted you guys about it that it would be resolved but no. I never heard back. as upsetting as this was life went on and I completely forgot about the matter.

Well now another issue arises. once again I preordered a game from GameStop called Forza Motorsport 4: Limited Collector’s Edition about two, maybe three months ago. once I found out that again each retailer would get a different preorder bonus that being different in game vehicle and it turns out best buy to me had the better vehicle (BMW 1 Series M Coupe) so I preordered from Best buy and cancelled my GameStop order. this was almost a month ago and today October 7 I get this email from Best Buy

Thank you for your Forza Motorsport 4: Limited Collector’s Edition (sku 2953607) pre-order on BestBuy.com. Unfortunately, due to an overwhelming demand, Best buy is unable to fulfill your pre-order; as a result, your order will be canceled.

What I don’t understand is why Best buy would continue to take preorders if they don’t know exactly how many copies of the game they would be receiving. I tried going back to GameStop and they stopped taking preorders a week ago. also I checked Amazon, Microsoft Store and Wal-Mart and none of them are taking preorders for the Limited Edition. so now because of a mistake by Best buy I will miss out on all the Preorder bonus features I was so looking forward to. I’m very disappointed, another game ruined. I’ll never preorder another game thru Best buy again. There’s a comfort in knowing you have a game reserved/waiting for but now I will have the joy of tracking down this game which seems to be sold out everywhere. Thanks for nothing Best buy.

5 Things I Can’t Wait to See in Mass Effect 3

No Comments 01 November 2011

1320114765 39 5 Things I Cant Wait to See in Mass Effect 3

I am a huge fan of the Mass Effect series.

I played the first game on Xbox and then again on PC (because I wanted to play the sequel on PC and had to get a save set up). I have completed all side quests in Mass Effect 2 and played through all the DLC (Lair of the Shadow Broker FTW).

In short, I like me some Mass Effect

So it’s no surprise that I am hugely excited about Mass Effect 3. Sadly it got pushed out from it’s expected 2011 release window and into 2012, but oh well, more time to play The Old Republic I guess.

The Mass Effect universe is incredibly deep and there are so many things that I am looking forward to learning more about in the final chapter of the trilogy.

Here are the 5 things that I am giddy with excitement to see in Mass Effect 3:

5. Fighting the Reapers:

So of course I am very interested to see how the main fight with the Reapers turns out. The first game did an excellent job at presenting these genocidal (galaxocidal even?) sentient machines as an enormous threat to all advanced life.

However, I think the second game did not do as good a job with this, with the focus being firmly on the Reaper puppets, in the form of the Collectors. They were cool enough, but nothing says menace like a giant squid shaped spaceship.

So I am looking forward to shifting focus back firmly on the Reapers in ME3 and kicking some planet harvesting squidship butt (if I can find their butts, that is).

4. more Mordin:

Right? Mordin was my favorite character in ME2, maybe followed very closely by Legion (but since Legion doesn’t sing Gilbert and Sullivan, nuts to him).

What I really like about Mordin is that he is not simply a two dimensional Jar-Jar Binks character, who is there only for comic relief. During ME2 we see that Mordin also has a dark history, as he has worked on modifying the genophage that afflicts the Krogans.

It’s clear that there is more to Mordin than just being a speed talking singing clown (there’s an idea for your next birthday party), and I’m really hoping that ME3 will give us a chance to see this character evolve further.

3. The role of the new Shadow Broker in the story:

Anyone who’s played through the DLC Lair of the Shadow Broker will know what I’m talking about.

I will not spoil it for anyone, who has not played through this amazing piece of content (shame on you though. go get it right away), but suffice to say that the end of this quest sees a new Shadow Broker installed and it is a person that Shepard knows well.

It is going to be super interesting to see how this new Shadow Broker will affect the story in ME3.

Will Shepard be getting lots of secret information to help him in the fight against the Reapers? will we see the relationship between Shepard and the new Shadow Broker cool as power corrupts the new Broker?

Also if we could return to the Broker’s ship in the lightning soaked atmosphere of Hagalaz that would be very cool.

2. Development of the Geth:

To me the Geth are probably even more interesting than the Reapers. while the Reapers are ancient, mysterious, malicious and just short of all-powerful, the Geth are a young race, split with indecision and fighting for their right to exist.

Meeting Legion in ME2 and doing his side quest really fired up my interest for the Geth. It made you look at the Geth as not just some mini Reapers that were all trying to kill all humans, Bender style, but a race that was trying to find its place in the Galaxy.

Honestly, if there is a decision to make in ME3 about helping the Quarians or the Geth, I’m not sure which I would with.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection DLC arrive this September 22nd

1317648941 19 Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection DLC arrive this September 22nd

If you happen to be a huge fan of the Call of Duty series, regardless of whether you game on a console or on the PC, then you might want to mark September 22nd on your computer and black it out, doing nothing but wait for the downloadable content (DLC) to be made available. oh yeah, that’s also when you make sure no one else at home is hogging your Internet connection so that you can get it downloaded to the respective machine in the quickest time possible.

This will be the last DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Rezurrection will arrive on both the PC and PS3 on September 22nd, which of course, those who have been enjoying it prior are Xbox 360 owners. Love busting zombies and sending them back to where they came from? You won’t go wrong with this DLC that comprises of nothing but one zombie level after another. In fact, four of the five maps included with the add-on were already available in World at War and the Hardened Edition of Black Ops, so basically you’re getting only one brand new map – the “Moon” map.

Is that alone worth forking out $14.99 for? Ah well, as a consolation, I guess getting a Zombies soundtrack and a Moon theme (if you’re rocking to a PS3) ain’t too shabby after all.

DLCs never come out right at the start of the day, they usually come out later in the afternoon or evening, u just have to be patient.

by Ian

That isnt entirly right, Skarlet was unfilled on my game for download when I woke up at 7:00 a.m. EST on the day she was released, but Kenshi on the other is still nowhere to be seen…particular PSN players have by now been able to download him for the past couple hours, and I have heard of select XBOX Live users able to do so, I reckon thy are rolling him out a small at a time to keep users from overloading the system. With a bit of luck we will see him today soon.

‘Dead Island’ Patch Is Live On 360, Still Coming On PS3 And PC » MTV Multiplayer

No Comments 21 September 2011

1316617408 46 ‘Dead Island’ Patch Is Live On 360, Still Coming On PS3 And PC » MTV Multiplayer

UPDATE: All this patch talk has us confused! Seems the “day one” patch did arrive on PC last week. the upcoming PC patch is more for minor fixes and tweaks.

ORIGINAL STORY: “Dead Island” is a bit of an odd bird. At times, it’s gorgeous, at other times, it’s horrendously ugly. Sometimes the multiplayer works flawlessly, and other times it’s a struggle just to invite someone into your game. and, despite all of that, I was more than happy to spend 30 hours romping through Banoi, bashing zombie heads in with an electrified sledgehammer.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t want them to fix some of the issues that seem to have plagued the game since launch. A “day one” patch was promised, but the PC and console versions have not been so lucky. Seems the exact meaning of “day one” is open to debate.

The 360 version, however, has finally received its update, which focuses on fixing a wide range of issues from quest bugs to thrown items getting picked up by strangers. you can also now use a ladder, even if someone else is using it. Welcome to the future, people!

Unfortunately for PS3 and PC owners, their patch is still in the works, with no specific release date planned.

Meanwhile, at least two DLC packs are planned for the game sometime in the future. the first, an arena battle mode, was planned for release in September, but these patches may delay that a bit. the second, which promises a brand new campaign from a different character’s point of view, currently has no release date.

If you’re one of the many who are enjoying “Dead Island” despite these bugs, feel free to check out our colored skulls guide to one of the more interesting Easter eggs in the game. We’ve also guide a guide for crafting some of the more valuable items in the game.
